This article details how and why a former Green Party candidate for Governor of Arizona was found homeless in the Ukraine. Apparently he was the victim of a scam and went to the Ukraine looking for “a mate”.
Dolego, a Green Party write-in candidate last year, was the victim of a dating scam that left him homeless and penniless until he was discovered by a local charity. He had been hoping to find investors for an engineering project and marry a woman named Yulia he had met online.
“I was looking for a Ukrainian mate, a partner, somebody who would stay with me, be my wife,’’ Dolego told the news service. “All the Slavic ladies in this part of the world are absolutely delightful.’’
Unable to track her down or find willing investors, Dolego was evicted from the room he was occupying and joined a group of homeless men roaming the streets of Chernivtsi on the Romanian border. He was discovered by social workers shocked to find a man speaking fluent English and carrying an American passport.
“He looked bad — his clothes were dirty, he was dirty, he looked like a typical homeless man,’’ said a member of the People’s Help charity.
I could not find any statistics on how many votes Dolego received as a write-in candidate, but that is not surprising considering how badly records are kept on write-ins.

Best story in IPR history.
I was just about to comment, but Thane beat me to it. Thane is correct. Dolego was never a declared write-in in the Green Party gubernatorial primary. He was a declared write-in in the general election, but in no sense was he a Green Party nominee. The Green Party had its own nominee on the November ballot for Governor, Larry Gist, as Thane says.
I went to the Arizona Secretary of State’s election web site and clicked on the link labelled “Official Election Canvass of Results”. Cary Dolego received 12 (twelve) write in votes in the general election according to that document.
According to the unofficial tally there were a total of 1,729,736 votes cast for the various candidates for Governor of Arizona.

He received less write in votes than write in candidate Anton Dowls (28) and write in candidate Janelle Wood (322).
Larry Gist, the Green Party candidate officially nominated as their candidate for Governor via petition and confirmed with 78% of the vote in the Arizona open Green Party primary.
