We reported at IPR that Arizona had a peculiar selection process for when sitting legislators resign. Recently, a legislator changed his registration to Independent and then resigned, so the county commission decided to pick an Independent to replace him.
Nicholas Fontana is an attorney based in the area who has been registered Independent for a long time and he was the candidate who was selected by this committee to become the newest legislator in Arizona and the first Independent legislator in Arizona history.

Nathan Fletcher (born December 31, 1976) is a member of the California State Assembly representing the 75th Assembly District He was elected as a Republican, but changed his affiliation to Independent in March 2012.[1]
He served in the American military and also worked as a business adviser and consultant. In June 2011, Fletcher announced his candidacy for the mayorship of San Diego.
