Reason’s Coverage: The Libertarian Party Convention Has Begun

Garrett Quinn has written over at Reason about the beginning of the Libertarian Party National Convention. Hopefully there will be more coverage to come from Reason.

The national party leaves it up to the state parties to determine how they pick delegates for the national convention. Most  select their delegates at a state convention or caucus, effectively relegating the presidential primary to the status of an irrelevant beauty contest in some states. The primary is really the rounds of voting that will take place on the convention floor. Delegates do not have to vote for any of the candidates either, as “None of the above” is an option.

How many delegates a state is allocated is determined by party membership and the number of votes cast for the party in the last national election. There are 1,042 delegates up for grabs with California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, and New York being the most delegate-rich states. With just three each, North Dakota, D.C., Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wyoming have the smallest delegations.

The home state of the front-runner for the nomination, former two-term New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, has just eight.

If any readers are aware of how their state delegation intends to vote–please clue us in below.

No parking fee if you’re willing to haul your own gear without a cart. Park in the East Garage on the 3rd Floor, and it takes you directly to the Casino Floor. Once inside, take the stairs down to the registration desk.

Bring your own coffee maker if it’s not too late, because the room doesn’t have one. Also a good idea to bring an ice chest. There are refrigerators in the rooms, but they’re already stocked with stuff, and if you move any of it, you get charged. I’m also glad we don’t have kids with us, because each room has a bar. If you pick anything up for more than 45 seconds, you automatically get charged for it.

Does anyone know if CSPAN will be streaming the convention live? I became a libertarian in 2008 after watching the convention and would love to be able to follow it again.

I have to say, I’m not impressed with the hotel so far. The room’s very nice, but seriously, you can’t even unload your car in front of the hotel if you self-park? And then they won’t let you use a cart, so you have to carry everything to your room? And on top of that, there’s a $100/night deposit they didn’t tell us about? That they promise to refund within 30 days?

The place is beautiful, and I appreciate the free internet but damn, that’s chintzy.
