RealClearPolitics: Is Libertarian Gary Johnson the Wild Card in Fall Election?

He doesn’t have a vast campaign account, as the two major-party candidates do, but he does have Roger Stone, a veteran of Republican presidential campaigns who says he’s sick of the party and is now consulting for Johnson. Stone believes that with the rise of social media, there are ways to break through the campaign din, and he’s cooking up some “provocative” stunts that will get Johnson attention in the months ahead.

Trent, normally I would agree with you on @11. But Colorado like California has seen the heavy hand of the Obama administration close more medical pot clinics then the previous Bush administration.

Colorado is ripe for making the point that when it comes to Pot and War their is no difference between Obama and Romney. Pro legalization is pushing 60% anti at 27%. Imagine Obama going around and telling the Colorado Voters that how they vote on legalization doesn’t matter it will still remain criminal!

Imagine, enough Colorado voters telling Obama, if that’s so we are voting for Johnson. If the election comes down to Colorado and Obama pulls another crass political move by reclassifying pot from a schedule 1 to a schedule 3 narcotic which would allow medical use.

I would count this as a huge libertarian win.Even if Johnson only got as many votes as Barr.

Im a big believer in getting more votes for each dollar. That means going after votes in safe states.

Colorado is in the midst of a legalize pot election. Obama is hoping that it brings out the young voters who will then vote for him for potus.

Garry getting out to all the pro-legalization rallies and onto as many universities as possible could very well take votes from Obama.

Garry needs to attend as many friendly events as possible that draw crowds and speak on as many local radio and local tv news shows as possible. By being the candidate who supports legalization he may get more opportunities in Colorado and Washington then in other states.

If the goal is a record popular vote total I have to agree with Joseph Thompson and zapper’s plan to finance a breakthrough year. If the goal is to win the election then one has to go with Austin Battenberg. Can the LP win in 2012? I don’t think any rational person could even begin to believe that. Guerilla warfare is the only realistic chance for a breakout.

@5 – IIC, Colorado has a major cannabis initiative on the ballot this fall. Johnson will be the only one of the three candidates on the ballot who support the initiative. Colorado therefore seems like a state with great potential for him. He should definitely campaign there.

If his campaign had $500 million I might agree with you. Care to fund it?

  7. Austin Battenberg Post author | June 18, 2012

I think he should campaign everywhere. To hell with the major parties.

GJ was in Denver yesterday and while I appreciate his appearance Colorado is not a state for him to campaign with BO and MR fighting mightily for it. A better fit would be states where one or the other is heavily favored and so votes for GJ will not impact the race. What we need right now (2012) are total number of votes and places like CA, NY, MA, UT, KY, and TX are places ripe for the strategy.

Looked all around RCP to see where Johnson’s polling. Looks like the polling companies are continuing to ignore.

Times a wasting folks. I had two casual acquaintances ask over the weekend if the LP is going to run anyone this year for president.
The campaign is invisible so far. While we are waiting for Stone to gin up some social media stunts, let’s use the old media. I’m writing a Letter to the Editor today to mention and support GJ. May I suggest all of you do the same?

  11. Robert Capozzi June 18, 2012

Yes. Ya know, despite my unease about Stone, I would say if there’s anyone who can come up with a break-thru stunt, it’s him.

fwiw line for GJ and Rand Paul question:

I believe that every time I tell the truth, I win. I can’t believe that Rand believes what he says when he endorsed Romney, but that’s on him.

Being a Republican — or a Democrat — is being part of the problem.

    Gary Johnson on a roll…
