Virgil Goode on the Ballot in Virginia Despite Republican Opposition

Thanks to Austin Battenberg for pointing us to this Examiner article:

Constitution Party presidential candidate Virgil Goode is officially — for now — on the presidential ballot in Virginia, a battleground state where he has deep roots and poses a real threat to Republican Mitt Romney.

The Virginia State Board of Elections ruled Tuesday that Goode’s name should appear of the state ballot in November. Goode turned in about 20,000 signatures, twice the legal requirement, in late August to qualify for the fall election.

But the state board also called for Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to widen the scope of an investigation that began last month into Goode’s petitions based on a challenge from the Republican Party of Virginia in a letter dated last Thursday. The 28-page document alleges Goode and two of his top signature gatherers committed widespread fraud; it claims they collected more signatures from more parts of the state than possible in a single day.

Republicans successfully pushed the Constitution Party off the ballot in Pennsylvania, another swing state and the home of Goode’s running mate.

“It’s ludicrous,” Goode said. “It’s a huge effort to squelch anyone who doesn’t toe the Romney line.”

    Austin Batterberg post # 1.

The Constitution Party does have a presence in
California, viz., as of May 21, 2012 it had 207
    electors.

You can blame California Secretary of State
Debra Bowen for not placing the name of Virgil
Goode on the ballot in the California primary.
I submitted his name to the Secretary of State
    she rejected Virgil Goode.

Note I am no longer the State Chairman of the
    American Independent Party of California.
The current State Chairman is Dr. Willey Drake,
    Sr.

    Sincerely, Mark Seidenberg, Vice Chairman,
    American Independent Party of California

Goode’s high vote totals will come almost exclusively from VA and UT. Those are the only places he’ll eclipse 1%, I think, especially since he didnt make the ballot in Maryland or Pennsylvania. I suppose Idaho and Wyoming are possibilities.

@6 Virginia is Goode’s home state, so of course he is going to focus there, swing or not. & if he wants to have anyone notice his campaign a stir in a swing is better.

No. Don’t focus on VA. Focus on non-swing states.

    Good for Goode.

    The more, the merrier.

I am especially pleased to see that the CP and LP defeated the illegal attempt by the Republicans to disqualify them in VA.

Steven, if I may build on what you have written , I think if Goode focuses on Va, Wy, Ut, Mo, and maybe a few others, it will be beneficial for the long-term stability of membership in those states. The aforementioned states are the best possibilities for gaining a relatively large membership and in turn electing members to the state legislature. This will have a real impact on legislation at the local level.

No matter what people might think of Goode as a possible President, his merit as a candidate is found in his activity and motion.

In my opinion, he is doing a great deal with very little resources. He fights when he can. They turned away from Pennsylvania because of the threat of a fee for the challenges.

I think these small battles will bear a harvest for the CP in the long run. Cheers.

“I’m surprised the Constitution Party doesn’t have a presence here.”

It didn’t need one until the 2008 fiasco. The AIP seemed a fine partner.

LOL you don’t need to give me credit but thank you. I’m glad Virgil Goode won this battle. Shame he couldn’t make it in California. I’m surprised the Constitution Party doesn’t have a presence here.
