GA, MO, NH, OH, OK, and WV LPs are having their state conventions this weekend. If anyone in any of these states is able to provide live updates please do so in the comments here. Please also post links to any twitter feeds, photos, videos, livestreams, blogging or news coverage elsewhere, etc., in the comments. Some information about the conventions can be found at http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/2014-state-conventions by clicking on each state’s name.

I have had to cancel my plans to personally be at one of these to provide coverage. More about that in the comments.

Libertarian Party of Georgia Nominates 2014 Candidates

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Marietta, GA – On March 8, The Libertarian Party of Georgia held their annual state convention in Marietta, nominating their slate of 2014 candidates. Gathering at the former location of Theatre in the Square, Libertarians from across the state came together for the annual meeting to decide who will represent them on the ballot and in the boardroom.

The 2014 candidate slate is led by founder and former CEO of the nanotechnology company, nGimat, Dr. Andrew Hunt, running for Governor. Andrew received his B.S. in Geology from Auburn University, a Master’s Degree in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In the race to replace Saxby Chambliss in the U.S. Senate, the Libertarian Party fielded the twice-elected Libertarian Amanda Swafford, making her the first female candidate for U.S. Senate nominated in 2014. A graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ms. Swafford formerly served on the Flowery Branch City Council, ending her term on December 31, 2011.

In addition, Libertarians nominated Aaron Gilmer to run for Public Service Commission, District 4. Aaron is an auditor with Automatic Data Processing, and he has served as a longtime volunteer with the Georgia Aquarium, in addition to his years of experience in leadership with the Libertarian Party of Georgia.

“I’m very proud of the quality of talented candidates we fielded for the 2014 election. The hard work of our candidates and activists in the past brought more people, talent, and funding to our growing party,” said Doug Craig, Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Georgia. “This is a very exciting time to be a Libertarian, as we continue to be the only party in Georgia focused on making government smaller, reducing the burdensome taxes, and standing up for more freedom.”

Due to the burdensome restrictions in place for independents and political bodies in Georgia, there often are not Libertarians on the ballot for state legislature races. For the first time since 2010, Libertarians also fielded a candidate for State House District 21. Woodstock attorney Jeff Amason garnered the nomination for this seat on Saturday and touted his campaign’s successes thus far in their pursuit to overcome those hurdles in place to prevent access to the ballot. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Amason seeks to represent the people of Cherokee County under the Gold Dome.

“As a former candidate for State House myself, I can appreciate the efforts undertaken by the Amason campaign already. I know it is difficult to get on the ballot as a LIbertarian, and I am impressed by their progress at this point,” added Chairman Craig. “I’m really excited to see another choice on the ballot for the voters in Cherokee County.”

As well as nominating candidate for office, Libertarians also selected their Executive Committee representation for 2014, considered bylaws and platform changes, and hosted 2013 candidate for Virginia Governor, Robert Sarvis.

The Libertarian Party is Georgia’s third largest party, standing for smaller government, lower taxes, and more freedom for all Georgians. Find out more at LPGeorgia.com

Matt – good idea although I have put up posts asking for volunteers before and not had much luck. I did include a call for volunteers in my post but some people have more mone than time (or aren’t in those states that are having conventions or will be too busy at the conventions etc). So I would love some contributions as well.

  4. Mark Axinn March 9, 2014

I have to keep the bartender busy at the New York LP Convention, so I will leave the live-blogging to someone else.

    We should have wifi available.

  5. Matt Cholko March 8, 2014

Then, on convention day (or the day before) post a new article for each convention that one or more people have “committed” to covering.

  6. Matt Cholko March 8, 2014

How about creating an article asking for volunteers to live blog each convention, and someone (Paulie? Warren?) following up with any volunteers via e-mail or phone with a 5 minute conversation that may create some sense of commitment.

  7. paulie March 8, 2014

No need to be sorry at all. I’m glad to see someone besides me provide this type of coverage. Hopefully it will become a trend. Thanks for coming back and clearing that up.

I always have to wonder, since I’ve experienced internet outages and lack of outlet access issues when reporting like that and then had people wondering what happened, not realizing I had lost ability to connect.

  8. Darryl W. Perry March 8, 2014

That was the end – sorry, I didn’t make that clear

  9. paulie March 8, 2014

Same for any of the other states listed in the headline/article.

  10. paulie March 8, 2014

Darryl thanks again for NH coverage. Was that the end of it, or did you lose internet connection? If anyone has photos, videos, links to articles elsewhere, links to twitter feeds and so on please post them here.

  11. paulie March 8, 2014

Jill – I know you’ll be busy, but I hope you or someone can blog it. No chance I’ll go to CA.

  12. Jill Pyeatt March 8, 2014

    Excellent report, Darryl, and congratulations!

The California convention is in three weeks (the 28th through 30th). I’m planning to make it this year, and I do think it’s an important year for us. There’s a strong Republican-lite undercurrent, which is quite worrisome to many of us.

  13. paulie March 8, 2014

If you do make the journey north, I pledge $100 to help offest your travel expenses.

Awesome, thank you! If I don’t make it (or even if I do) I hope someone else liveblogs it like Darryl is doing with NH here. Same for all the other states.

Be it resolved that the members of the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire support and call for Governor Maggie Hassan to sign HB1625 into law.

We the members of the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire stand for smaller government, and lower taxes.

  17. Mark Axinn March 8, 2014

    What?

    No one voted for NOTA?

What kinda operation you running up there?

Too many people agreeing with each other at an LP event sets a bad precedent. Next thing, you’ll all be united in defeating statist Republicrats.

  18. Darryl W. Perry March 8, 2014

    Max Abramson nominated for Governor
Gardner Goldsmith nominated for US Senate
Brenden Kelly nominated for Congress District 1 (not present to accept)

    Rich Tomasso nominated for Chair
    Max Abramson nominated for Vice-Chair
    Aiden Aikenburg nominated for Treasurer
Darryl W. Perry nominated for Secretary

Nominations closed, and all candidates nominated/elected by unanimous consent

  19. Mark Axinn March 8, 2014

    Paulie–

You are of course welcome to join us in Albany on April 26, but it’s quite a hike from your base, so there will not be any hurt feelings if you cannot make it to provide your usual exemplary reporting that day.

If you do make the journey north, I pledge $100 to help offest your travel expenses.

    Howdy folks

Some people have expressed appreciation for the liveblogging I did at Virginia and Arkansas LP conventions, Bylaws and LNC.

I would like to do some more of this but as of right now can not afford any more trips. I’d love to see some other IPR writers liveblog some of these conventions and committees instead of me. So far it seems it is mainly just me.

Last “weekend” turned into a whole week on the way to, from and in DC (snow delayed me getting out of DC) so I am already cutting out Oklahoma, which I hoped to cover this coming weekend, as well as my backup choice (Georgia). Tennessee next weekend is looking less likely as well.

I was hoping to find people to put me up in VA in between the VA convention and Students for Liberty the following weekend in exchange for signatures, but that did not happen and I ended up moteling and not working that whole week. Nor did a ride I was hoping for back from DC to Alabama (the first time out of my two recent trips there) work out either.

As of this time I am hoping to make:

    MS – April 4-6
    TX – April 11-13
    NY – April 26
IN – Platform Committee, early May
    AL – May 10
    FL – May 16-18
    Columbus – Jun 26-29

But realistically I will have to cut out most of these without some financial help.

So I’m hoping some of you will

    1) Cover some of these (and others: http://www.lp.org/blogs/staff/2014-state-conventions) instead of (or in addition to) me
    2) Donate to help me get to some of them to cover them instead of you

    and/or

    3) Post about this on IPR and elsewhere and raise some money to help make some more of these trips possible.

    Thanks!
