Working Families Party Eyeing Diane Ravitch as Possible Challenger Against Gov. Cuomo

Diane Ravitch

(The following story was originally published in New York Daily News.)

The Working Families Party is eying education activist Diane Ravitch as its gubernatorial candidate should the liberal minor party decide to withhold its backing of Gov. Cuomo, a source told the Daily News Wednesday morning.

The party has spoken to Ravitch, 75, about possibly being its nominee and she has expressed interest, the source said.

“Either way, she’ll have a role at Saturday’s (WFP) convention,” the source said.

It’s still unclear in which direction the party will go.

As the Daily News reported in Wednesday’s editions, Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio and leaders from key unions that help make up the Working Family Party met with party leaders Bill Lipton and Dan Cantor Tuesday to discuss backing the governor for reelection.

Would she be the second women in the Governors’ race? I would love to see the WFP NOT nominate Cuomo. That would be hilarious.

A central issue here is that in New York the two political parties that get the most votes for Governor have an enormous enhancement in their political position by virtue of being able to appoint election officials of various sorts. The Republican and Working Families Parties with the right candidates are actually fairly close, so by appointing the right or wrong candidate the WFP might drive the Republicans out of this (not the same as California) Top Two status. Note that the count is votes for the party for Governor, not for the candidate, so that if the WFP nominates Cuomo votes for Cuomo on the WFP line are determinative.

It is highly unlikely that this issue will affect Cuomo’s re-election. As a good Libertarian I add “…as his defeat by the Libertarian candidate is still certain.”

Hopefully her, That could send the GOP to Minor party status Statewide. That would be interesting.
