G.E., you’re in rare form today.

Thanks for noticing. I told my wife I was “in the zone” on IPR, and she was less than impressed.

Th4 State is named Nevada, or snowy land, as the first Spanish explorers named it after snows then current.

  3. JimDavidson December 19, 2008

Why is snow in Vegas such a surprise? The city itself is at 2000 feet elevation and is surrounded by mountains which see snow. I saw snow in Vegas back in 1991. And Pahrump, about 60 miles away, also sees snow quite often.

That “” was supposed to have “snicker” in it.

Keep in mind, not only libertarians or LP members vote on polls :p

  7. Ross Levin December 18, 2008

LP poll: “Are white people naturally the best race, or is it the environment in which they are raised that makes them this way?”

  8. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

    Most people saying “Maybe”.

  9. paulie cannoli Post author | December 18, 2008

How do you reckon it’ll turn out?

  10. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

    LP poll for tomorrow:

“Do you still beat your wife?”

  11. George Phillies December 18, 2008

Why not poll Libertarians about whether they think cavemen and dinosaurs lives at the same time, or whether they think the earth is flat.

If you want to show your unity with the philosophy of stupid, you should do it right.

  12. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

The enviro-scam that is global warming is the biggest threat to our liberty and money

Like paulie said, you need to divorce the perfectly-valid scientific hypothesis of AGW from what the statists want to use it for.

Both AGW and mental disorder science have been semi-hijacked by certain individuals with political goals. That does not make the science invalid.

  13. Libertarian Joseph December 18, 2008

I’m not really a capitalist because I just would like to see the destruction of the STATE apparatus. I’m not going to talk about any “security firms”

  14. Ross Levin December 18, 2008

Quote of the Day for Steven Druckenmiller on #25 and #27.

I think the people who rail against AGW today would have supported the idea of it 100 years ago. Back then, it was a bit of a backwaters theory with not too much science supporting it and a lot of criticism from the mainstream.

  15. Sivarticus December 18, 2008

The enviro-scam that is global warming is the biggest threat to our liberty and money, tied with the War on Terror.

  16. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

Please, Savage thinks that everyone has a mental disorder. Shall I quote from the Savage Nation?

  17. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

mm, yes, people with schizophrenia are TOTALLY FAKING. If they just had enough discipline, they could stop being schizophrenics.

  18. Catholic Trotskyist December 18, 2008

Capitalists used to say that socialism is a mental illness. Some still do, like with Michael Savage’s book, “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.” A lot of people think that Catholic Trotskyism and my constant quoting of the bible is a mental illness too. All is that to say that GE is correct that there is no mental illness.

  19. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

There’s NO SUCH THING as “mental illness.”

Oh, well that settles that then, despite all of the physiological and psychological science that says you are a moron.

The only reason you even deny the concept of mental illness is because you’ve seen it used as a hammer against your chosen ideology. Kind of like how AGW deniers don’t care about the science, they only care if the science can be used against them.

  20. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

“Mike – just out of curiosity, what do you think causes homosexuality?”

I have no idea, but if I had to guess, it would be gene involved.

  21. Libertarian Joseph December 18, 2008

To some socialists, wanting less government is a mental illness. You would get sent to the gulag for that sort of thing.

  22. G.E. December 18, 2008

just because a psychoanalytic manual defined homosexuality as a psychological disorder doesn’t mean that all psychiatrists agreed.

True. I was generalizing. You caught me.

Here’s the secret, Ross: There’s NO SUCH THING as “mental illness.” That’s not a theory but a fact. The homosexuality issue proves it. “Mental illness” is whatever a bunch of socialists deem as “abnormal” behavior.

The supposedly free market isn’t working fast enough (whether that’s because of the govt or in spite of it, I’m not sure).

It would solve any problems faster without government interference.

  24. Libertarian Joseph December 18, 2008

Ross, what would you prefer? For the government to come in and ban all chemicals? And if our economy wasn’t performing bad already… lol

  25. Steven Druckenmiller December 18, 2008

Although I think that Mr. Theodore is wrong in saying that he is not qualified to judge, I think a poll on this is pretty much the stupidest way to talk about it.

And I agree with paulie: Whether AGW is occurring is sort-of irrelevant. it should be incumbent on those who want the state to do something about it to show how and why that is desirable over letting it be.

  26. Ross Levin December 18, 2008

The supposedly free market isn’t working fast enough (whether that’s because of the govt or in spite of it, I’m not sure). Just because there’s some cheesey, stupid network on TV about how to recycle for idiots, that doesn’t mean that one of the more complex and pressing issues of our time is being solved.

  27. Libertarian Joseph December 18, 2008

Who cares if it’s real? The free market is already acting. Anyone notice all of this “go green” stuff going on? Or how about the green network? The government will just get in the way.

    I support free market environmentalism

  28. Ross Levin December 18, 2008

GE – just because a psychoanalytic manual defined homosexuality as a psychological disorder doesn’t mean that all psychiatrists agreed.

Mike – just out of curiosity, what do you think causes homosexuality?

  29. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

Last time I tried that, my governor got arrested…

  30. G.E. December 18, 2008

Well, you’re not an expert on political science either, so I guess you ought to just STFU, retreat to a box, and never speak again.

  31. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

Ya, we’re gonna get hit by that as well tonight.

  32. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

I’m just saying that I can’t agree or disagree with this stuff, as I’d be following the political herd of my party. I’m not going to lie, I don’t know a gosh darned thing about this. But I’m not going to run around acting like I do.

Yes, I am a gold guy, but I’m not debating economic scholars on it.

  33. G.E. December 18, 2008

    Global warming? HA!

    Snowing in fucking Vegas.

Mike T can come shovel the 10-inches of “global warming” I’m expected to get dumped on my driveway tonight.

  34. Catholic Trotskyist December 18, 2008

    Maybe.

  35. Steven R Linnabary December 18, 2008

    Mike-

I’ve never met a scientifically trained person that actually agrees with man made global warming.

Everybody that I know personally that speaks out (professionally) on this issue is actually trained in law or education or writing. IOW, professional activists.

The meteorologists that I’ve met or otherwise know usually roll their eyes when the subject comes up.

And while most people DO admit that there is some warming, this warming started before the industrial age began.

    Shalom

  36. G.E. December 18, 2008

Mike: Then you can have no opinion on anything. There are “trained” psychoanalysts who still classifiy homosexuality as a mental illness. I say “still” because ALL of them did so until relatively recently. So guess what, “experts” can be wrong. They can also be motivated by things other than science. If you can’t “second-guess” experts, then you cannot have an opinion on ANYTHING. You support the gold standard — more economists favor fiat money than scientists believe in Al Gore’s version of global warming.

  37. kiddleddee December 18, 2008

Mike, would you second guess a scientifically trained person that said it didn’t exist?

  38. Mike Theodore December 18, 2008

I’m not a flippin’ scientist, why would I make that judgment? I’m in no position to second guess every scientifically trained person that I’ve met that said it exists.

  39. G.E. December 18, 2008

Why isn’t there a Bob Barr option for “all of the above”? Or do you just vote YES one day and NO the next?

Next up for the LP poll: Did you pay to have your unborn child butchered in your wife’s womb while having an affair with a skank you later married and claiming to be “pro-life” and “pro-family” all along?

  40. redgar December 18, 2008

Boy, I wasn’t really paying attention with that post!

I’m mostly a ‘maybe’ leaning towards it being a myth.

  41. paulie cannoli Post author | December 18, 2008

I see it as neither myth nor gospel.

I think we have two challenges here:

One is to separate the debate over the scientific validity of global climate change theory from its political use to justify big government.

The other is to break the general link that if a serious problem exists in the world, government must be the way to solve it.
