Libertarians Elected and Reelected to Office

Several Libertarian Party members were elected or reelected yesterday. Here’s what we have so far from the LNC list (add more in the comments to this post, or update it if you write for IPR):

I want to congratulate Aaron Starr on winning possibly the “biggest” seat of the night by a Libertarian. He is now a Council member for the City of Oxnard in Ventura County in California. I believe it’s a non partisan seat, but when a LNC Regional Alternate wins a seat I think that makes it pretty apparent what team he is part of.

Also, congratulations to the people of Oxnard that voted against their 87% sewer fee increase, another victory for team small government, that Aaron led the fight for. Oxnard is a city of about 200,000 people if I am not mistaken. It’s not a large city but its not tiny either. Aaron has run a systematic and professional campaign, building his name recognition along the way over 2 election cycles. People should take note of what he did. Kudos Aaron!

In Kentucky, Mitch Rushing has won a PARTISAN race for County Commissioner District B in Jefferson County, KY. The office is elected at-large, and has limited duties, due to Metro government moving most county duties to the city of Louisville, but still makes important
decisions regarding sewers and roads.
No Democrat or Republican filed for the office, an Independent was removed due to a faulty petition, and a write-in was also unsuccessful. MR. RUSHING NOW REPRESENTS OVER 750,000 PEOPLE IN A PARTISAN OFFICE AS AN ELECTED LIBERTARIAN.
Mr. Rushing will serve in the highest elected partisan office in Kentucky, and nationally I believe he will represent the most people as an elected Libertarian.

Judge Susan Bell (L) was reelected to her 3rd or 4th term as Hagerstown (IN) Town
Judge. Susan is so well respected as a judge for the work she has done that the old parties
chose to not run anyone against her for the second time!

If the other members of the Oxnard City Council don’t yet know what hit them, I’m sure they will find out soon! Congratulations, Aaron! It’s good to know that the residents of at least one city in California should be able to look forward to more responsible fiscal management by their elected representatives.
Congrats as well to Mitch Rushing in Kentucky – I wonder what is the highest number of constituents who’ve previously been represented by a Libertarian? If 750,000 doesn’t beat that number, I’m guessing it must not be far off. And to Susan Bell in Indiana for winning reelection, and all the other Libertarians across the country who got elected last night!
But I also want to recognize all those Libertarians who didn’t win in conventional electoral terms, but who fought the good fight and may have won important libertarian victories in the never-ending battle for hearts and minds. Those victories, although less visible, may in some cases ultimately prove more meaningful and enduring.
Thank you to all the pro-freedom candidates who ran under the banner of the Libertarian Party, and just as importantly to all the people who were there helping and supporting them behind the scenes, volunteering on their campaigns, donating money and other resources, maintaining the Libertarian Party infrastructure necessary to support those campaigns, and being out there in their communities advancing libertarian ideas and making the soil more fertile for Libertarian candidates to win votes. Not to mention all those who fought to get good ballot measures passed and resist statist measures that further encroach on our rights.
The struggle for freedom continues – onward and upward (on the Nolan Chart)!

According to a comment at Ballot Access News:
Jessica Abbott, the 27-year old vice-chair of the Tidewater LP, defeated an incumbent by nearly 20 points for a Virginia Beach city council seat. It was a non-partisan race but it was no secret what her affiliation was.

It looks like the Libertarian Party has gone yet another election cycle without electing one state legislator or one county Sheriff.

Yes, that’s a pretty solid first outing in a safe district. Much better than the disgraceful 6% that John Moore got as a third place finisher in his bid for re-election.

Good stuff!
I saw Dennis Hof was pulling about 40% of the vote in his bid for a seat in the Nevada State Assembly, it’s a good showing… shame he didn’t win it. Hopefully he’ll consider running again.
