Green Party Presidential Hopeful Cornel West: “Democratic Party is beyond redemption”

Green Party presidential hopeful Cornel West criticized the Democratic Party earlier this week, calling it “beyond redemption” and accusing two prominent members associated with its democratic socialist wing of being “window dressing.”

Speaking in an interview on The Hill’s Rising on Tuesday, West was asked about independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders defending his endorsement of President Joe Biden’s reelection by emphasizing the need to protect democracy and prevent a return of former President Donald Trump.

“I think that the argument [Sanders] is making means that there’s never any possibility for breaking the corporate duopoly, that there’s never any possibility of trying to speak to the needs of the poor working people,” West said on Rising. “[…] The Democratic Party is beyond redemption at this point when it comes to seriously speaking to the needs of poor and working people.”

West initially criticized Sanders over his endorsement earlier this month, calling him “fearful of neo-fascism of Trump.” A timestamp of the interview with BET’s The Breakfast Club, where West made those statements, is available below.

In addition to his criticism of the Democratic Party, West also called out both Senator Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists and popular progressive figure.

“[Sanders] and [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] and the others are going to be, in a certain sense, window dressing, at worst, and, at best, people to appeal to every four years.”

Bernie Sanders should run for Governor of Vermont. He’ll never be president. At least as a governor he could implement some of his beliefs. In senate it’s a waste of time for him.

As people like me know, Bernies been a sheepdogger in 2016 and 2020. His 2016 run was motivated by anti-Clinton animus as much as policy. In 2020, even after Dear Leader (sic) shivved him in the Dem primaries with the help of Harry Reid, Bernie still called Biden his good friend.

And, Bernie’s a garden variety national Democrat on most foreign policy; anti-BDS, anti-Palestinian, pro-Warmonger Joe in Ukraine and pro-Cold War 2.0 without a lot of thinking. And, well before 2016, don’t forget his lusting after F-35s for the Vermont National Guard.

Even his vote against the Iraq War wasn’t a solo job.

It’s nice that Cornel is recognizing the coffee he’s smelling. That said, many #BernAnon now finally saying they’ll vote Green still believe the myth of Sanders of the past, not the reality.
