On Wednesday afternoon, the Forward Party submitted over 2,500 signatures to the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s office in an effort to become the state’s seventh recognized political party.
According to a recent article in the Deseret News covering the event, a gathering of Forward Party supporters assembled outside the Utah state Capitol on Wednesday afternoon. Among the notable individuals identified within the crowd were former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, a Republican who previously served under Mitt Romney and now sits on the Forward Party Board of Directors, and January Walker, a United Utah candidate running for Congress with the support of the Forward Party.
If the Forward Party successfully submits a sufficient number of valid signatures, it will join the ranks of recognized political parties in Utah like the Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, United Utah, Independent American, and Constitution parties.
Becoming a recognized political party in Utah entails submitting at least 2,000 valid signatures from registered voters along with the official name of the organization and its logo.
Utah Election Code further specifies that a qualified party must also extend voting privileges in its primary election to unaffiliated voters, provide options for delegates to cast votes remotely or offer alternative voting methods at its conventions, schedule its convention on certain days in March, and grant its candidates the opportunity to access ballot access through signature gathering or the convention process.
