In a lengthy op-ed for Catholic Online, Roman Catholic deacon Keith Fournier, while praising Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama on several points, says he is considering alternative candidates. Fournier writes in part, “I have looked to the third party candidates. So far, I have not found the consistent ethic of life (properly understood), concern for the poor, support of true marriage, concern for the immigrant, love for peace and true economic populism converge in one candidate. I also see some candidates who once held issue positions I support, only to quickly shed them to now obtain a nomination.” He then lauds independent hopeful Average Joe Schriner, saying Schriner’s “small town honesty, his love for his family, his country, his Church and his common sense exposition on the great issues of our age in these nonsensical times. … I may have actually found a candidate to consider who is really ‘Whole Life/Pro-Life.'”

Fournier has clearly bought into a certain Catholic spin on economic and social (not abortion and gay marriage) policy. While I don’t think Catholic social teaching allows for economic reductionism, the doctrine of subsidiarity meshes very nicely with paleo policies. I am not Catholic, but a lot of Catholic paleos would not agree that “concern for the poor” means you should support some federal social program.
The deacon wants a socially conservative socialist. In other words a Nazi. Maybe he should look into Jonathan Taylor-Bowles. Well, drat, the deacon also wants open immigration combined with an even more generous welfare state.
