Allah Divine is a candidate for City Council in Trenton, New Jersey, for the New Black Panther Party. He is a regional rep and chapter leader of Trenton, New Jersey’s New Black Panther Party. He has made it into a runoff for the North Ward city council seat.
However, news has just been uncovered that he attended a rally in Harlem and burned an American flag.
The acts of desecration took place during a protest against white oppression, last July 5 in Harlem, N.Y., after members of the New York-Trenton-Newark chapter of the new Panther party marched along Frederick Douglas Boulevard to 125th Street in New York City.
A voiceover in the documentary (shown on YouTube) explains, “The new Black Panther Party burns the flag to show their hatred for the U.S. government. They are calling for a new system of government for and by blacks … For the New Black Panthers, the flag is nothing more than a symbol of oppression.”
And after the hand of Divine Allah can be seen setting fire to the flag on the sidewalk with a white cigarette lighter, he can be heard proclaiming:
“As a conscious person, I’m supposed to bust down idols. You’re not supposed to hold anything up as idols — this here is an idol, from a country that has been oppressing my people for hundreds of years.”
He and others in the crowd had shown “disdain” by walking on the flag. “The red on that flag represents the blood of the people … the white represents the white man, the devil, the devil who brought you over here …” said the voiceover.
In campaigning this spring for Trenton’s North Ward Council seat, Divine Allah — originally known in Trenton as Brian Keith Bethea before he changed his name — used signs that showed him in front of the black star of the Panther flag, proclaiming, “IT’S OUR TIME!!!”
And in the May 11 election, he finished second to a former Trenton City Council member, Marge Caldwell-Wilson. He will compete in a runoff election with the older, white woman on June 15.
Caldwell-Wilson finished with 34 percent of the vote.
Allah Divine issued a press release in response, which said in part:
In an effort to stir up the already heightened racial tensions in the United States, surrounding the election of President Barack Obama, National Geographic documented The New Black Panther Party at a community ‘Rally Against Government Oppression’ – in Harlem, New York. The footage shown was taken in JULY 2008 and released in JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2009 shortly after the presidential inauguration. What was never documented and shown were the Summer-Long community activities and events that were held by the New Black Panther Party in various cities/chapters on the east coast, particularly here in the City of Trenton. So the intent [seemingly] was to portray unorganized ‘Black’ anger, hatred, radical sensationalism, and rage.
Allah Divine’s opponent in the runoff is an older, white, female, incumbent.
