Michigan LP Chair Emily Salvette endorses Wayne Root for national chair

Email from Wayne Root to contact.ipr@gmail.com:

“It’s time the Libertarian Party had a horse in the media race. After almost 30 years in the LP, I’m ready to stop talking to ourselves and start talking to the world. That’s why I’m endorsing Wayne Root for LNC Chair and Mark Rutherford for Vice Chair.”

-Emily Salvette

State Chair, Libertarian Party of Michigan

2010 LP Credentials Committee

2006 and 2008 LP Credentials Committee Chair

2004-2008 LNC Alternate and Representative, Region 3

I chalk up the sweep of the region to the Rutherford effect. Mark has been active in that region for many years and commands the trust and respect of most people in the region (and many people outside it).

Here’s a question to ponder: How many of Root’s endorsements do you think he’d still have if Rutherford weren’t running as Vice Chair and basically promising to handle all of the duties of the Chair other than media appearances?

Rutherford is going to get Root a lot of delegates. Not so much directly as indirectly: 1) many LP leaders greatly respect Rutherford and will support Root/Rutherford as a result, 2) a lot of delegates in the states of those LP leaders will partly defer to their judgment. This is going to be a very close race.

Also, if Root wins Chair, I fully expect he and Rutherford to endorse a slate of At-Large candidates. Probable endorsements: Judge James Gray, Rebeca Sink-Burris, Kevin Knedler, Alicia Mattson, M Carling. That’s all just speculation on my part though.

The more full delegations are from IN, OH, KY, and MI, the better Root’s chances. Root supporters seem to be getting out the vote better than his detractors so far. I was very surprised more radicals didn’t setup ride shares to try to get others to the convention.

I am not sure about this but some are saying media appearances are not an important function of the chair’s position. They criticize Root for saying it is.

I saw the chairmen of the Democratic and Republican parties on television (CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, etc.) over the weekend. I guess they did not get the message.

me_ im not , they didnt do it for Denver which is why Barr won. Incidentally I endorse David Nolan for At Large Rep-duh!

  5. Denver Delegate

Mark Rutherford deserves respect for his past service to the Libertarian Party.

But his frothing-at-the-mouth endorsement of Bob Barr’s presidential bid from the lectern of the 2008 convention … yes, in Denver … gives me pause about his judgment and temperment.

    Chuck # 4. Hello Chuck.
I am not aware of M or Alicia running for at-large.

    Don’t forget about Bill Redpath.

    IN full delegation
OH full-delegation for first time ever
KY and MI – near full.

We are tired of the two-party system out here in the midwest. The largest block of voters out here are independent and they are looking for a political home. We plan to give it to them.

Tired of the 2 party system- so it’s time for a 2nd Republican party!

  8. Kevin Knedler

Goodness NO to any notion of yet another Republican party– repulsive idea. They had there shot and blew it.

I’m not aware of any stated intention of M or Alicia to run either, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t.

I haven’t seen Redpath endorse anyone. Perhaps he believes it would be inappropriate for the sitting chair to endorse (I would tend to agree). You’re right that Root would probably endorse Redpath.

I didn’t mean to imply those people would be good or bad on the LNC. I wad just predicting the Root endorsed slate was likely.

Kevin, hopefully you will run for Region 3 alternate in case you don’t win At-Large. In my opinion serving as an alternate is a great way to get familiar with the LNC and start out serving the LP nationally.

    Chuck # 13. Hello Chuck.
No “plan B” for me. Others want to run for Region 3 rep and alternate and I will not stand in their way. I network plenty with Region 3 already. The more the merrier.

  11. Denver Delegate

Just got my smear piece from Brian Holtz in today’s mail, along with Alicia Mattson’s mailer for LNC Secretary.

    I see both used Click2Mail.

These letters follow the smear piece from Chris Barber, and Aaron Starr’s mailer for LNC Treasurer sent to my pseudonym (with Starr dropping the ZIP+4 whereas the others included it).

Two more years for the smearbund?

    Interesting.

It appears I am not on any of their snail mail lists. I was a delegate in 2000, 2004, 2008 and am a delegate again this year.

I got Holtz, Rutherford, Hancock, and Phillies mailers. Have not yet received Barber, Starr, or Mattson.

I have moved since ’08 convention, so I wonder if some are using older address lists.

That, or I may not be the target audience for some of the mailings.
