A tyrant is always stirring up some war or other, in order that the people may require a leader.”
Why are United States service men and women still dying in Iraq? I remember distinctly hearing President Bush tell the American people back in May that the war in Iraq was over. Glorious victory has been declared and freedom has been proclaimed for the mistreated Iraqi citizens. So why are young men and women serving in the United States military still dying in a war that has been over for six months? Why aren’t mothers and fathers storming Washington, DC demanding the safe return of their precious offspring? Why aren’t husbands, wives and children marching down Pennsylvania Avenue pleading for the immediate recall of their beloved spouses and parents? Why aren’t we supporting the troops in Iraq by calling on our legislators to demand that President Bush bring these brave young people home?
As an editor for a daily news service I cannot tell you how sick I am of editing stories on a daily basis about Army soldiers being gunned down thousands of miles away from home. As a US Air Force veteran myself nothing would bring me greater pleasure than to never have to report the death of another Marine that has given the ultimate sacrifice for his country. But, according to reports released by the Pentagon last week it looks like this old veteran will be reporting deaths of military personnel well into next year at least. You see, the President does not plan to bring American GI’s home any time soon. In fact, the report from the Pentagon says we will be calling up even more reservists to be deployed to Iraq sometime after the first of the year. But wait a minute! I thought the damned war was over!
