Green Party Candidate for 39th District State Representative Locks Incumbent Out of Major Endorsements

(CHICAGO) – Jeremy Karpen, Green Party candidate for 39th State Representative, has secured the endorsements of both major Chicago newspapers and other organizations and community leaders. In doing so, his opponent, Maria “Toni” Berrios, is one of only two General Assembly members from Chicago – the other being Speaker Michael Madigan – not to receive at least one of the papers’ endorsements.

In its endorsement, the Chicago Sun-Times said that Karpen is “far more independent, more progressive and possesses greater depth” than Berrios.

The Chicago Tribune endorsement, tying Berrios directly to Madigan, describes her as “a loyal soldier protecting entrenched power in Springfield.”

“I am proud to have the support of both our major newspapers, and their endorsements confirm what I hear on people’s doorsteps,” said Karpen. “Voters are tired of the gridlock in Springfield, and tired of politicians that serve themselves rather than their community.”

Voter frustration with the Springfield status quo – and Berrios in particular – is demonstrated by the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) supporting Karpen. PDA is not supporting any other candidates for the General Assembly.

“We wanted to send a message that we don’t support unqualified candidates simply because of a ‘D’ next to their name,” said Bill Bianchi, State Coordinator for Progressive Democrats of America. “Jeremy Karpen shares the progressive, independent qualities and
principles we support, so we support him. He’s got all the pieces to win this election.”

Other major Karpen organizational endorsers are the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), which had never before endorsed a Green candidate; and the Independent Voters of Illinois – Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO), which also endorsed Karpen in 2008.

Community leaders which have endorsed Karpen include immigrant rights activist Jorge Mújica and local housing activist Delia Ramirez.

“The combination of support from newspapers, organizations, and local community leaders demonstrates that Jeremy Karpen has a broad, deep base of support in the community,” said Phil Huckelberry, Chair of the Illinois Green Party. “People across Chicago, and clearly in this district in particular, are sick of Machine politics, and want real change, not more lip service.”

Jeremy Karpen is the Green Party candidate for 39th State Representative. He is a licensed professional counselor, working as a supervisor with at-risk youth at a residential treatment center in Chicago. Karpen volunteers his time working as domestic violence
educator. He has been a consistent and outspoken community activist, fighting for housing, health care, equitable education funding, immigrant rights, and electoral reform.
