President Obama began the 2011 State of the Union address by congratulating the freshman class of the 112th Congress and asking people to be “mindful of the empty chair in this Chamber, and pray for the health of” Gabrielle Giffords. The President then mentioned the supposed “debate” between team blue and team red over the last two years saying, “that’s what a robust democracy demands.” Though, as a Constitutional law “scholar,” President Obma should know that the United States of America is supposed to be a Republic, not a democracy.
The President mentioned the recent mid-term elections saying, “governing will now be a shared responsibility between parties. New laws will only pass with support from Democrats and Republicans.” Unfortunately for the American people, the only things that will be able to get the needed bi-partisan support will not be laws that reduce the size, scope or power of the federal government. One need only look at the bi-partisan legislation passed during the Bush & Clinton administrations.
President Obama claims tax cuts were passed in December, there were no tax cuts passed by Congress or signed by President Obama in December. There was an extension of tax rates that were scheduled to expire, however there were no tax cuts passed in December.
He then went into the purpose of his speech, “winning the future.”
President Obama did not propose to “win the future” with plans to eliminate the IRS, war on drugs, legal tender laws or any other number of failed policies and agencies that have caused the condition we live in. President Obama said, “We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world. We have to make America the best place on Earth to do business. We need to take responsibility for our deficit, and reform our government. That’s how our people will prosper. That’s how we’ll win the future. And tonight, I’d like to talk about how we get there.” The easiest way to make sure America is the “best place on Earth to do business” would be to eliminate the regulations and licensing laws that prevent new businesses from opening. Congress should also abolish the Federal Reserve and legal tender laws, which allow the private central bank to manipulate the money supply which causes the “boom-bust” cycle.
“The first step in winning the future,” Obama says, “is encouraging American innovation.” Though when he says “encouraging American innovation” he doesn’t mean removing subsidies that support existing business in certain industries which intentionally hinder or prevent competition. Instead of eliminating subsidies, the President called for an increase in subsidies for “biomedical research, information technology and especially clean energy technology.” Obama wants to use government force to “have 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015” and “80% of America’s electricity will come from clean energy sources by 2035.”
The President also wants to spend more taxpayer funding to replace No Child Left Behind and “prepare 100,000 new teachers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.”
President Obama said, “America is the nation that built the transcontinental railroad, brought electricity to rural communities, and constructed the interstate highway system.” The transcontinental railroad was built by private business, electricity was originally provided by competing companies (until companies were able to get government granted monopolies) though the interstate highway system was built with taxpayer money without explicit constitutional authority to do so. He also wants to spend taxpayer funding to expand infrastructure, with a goal “to give 80% of Americans access to high-speed rail” within 25 years and within 5 years “we will make it possible for business to deploy the next generation of high-speed wireless coverage to 98% of all Americans.”
The President then mentioned the complicated tax code being enforced by the IRS and written by lobbyist and special interests. Instead of asking Congress to abolish the IRS and the income tax while reducing wasteful spending and eliminating unconstitutional spending, he asked Congress to “simplify the system” and eliminate loopholes; optimistically hoping that lobbyist will not be able to get tax breaks in the future. He also proposed a $400 billion “freeze” on spending, which amounts to not increasing spending on 12% of the federal budget.
President Obama says he has “ordered a review of government regulations. only When we find rules that put an unnecessary burden on businesses, we will fix them. But I will not hesitate to create or enforce commonsense safeguards to protect the American people.” I hope the President keeps his word on this, though I will not hold my breath.
Obama claims the “Iraq War is coming to an end” though last August, he declared the undeclared war to be “over” while keeping 50,000 troops in Iraq. The President also warned the world, “we will not relent, we will not waver, and we will defeat you.”
President Obama’s State of the Union address on “winning the future” was nothing more than a message on spending tax payer money on central planning while giving lip service to cutting government spending and lowering federal taxes.

@Darryl So by that view the federal government shall not constitutionally have the power to enact in any way shape or form a system for the public defense, even when control, maintenance, and legislature concerning that system was given to the states simply because the constitution does not specifically state that Congress or the President could facilitate trade between the states? I’m aware I ran on a bit, but am I correct in understanding that? If so I’m far from being able to understand how that could honestly be told to the people in any other way. It wouldn’t seem to me that it would be such a bad thing that anyone who was having their own power cut by it would have a problem with it. It just sounds like a “we’ll take care of our own problems” claim that is irrelevant to the current situation once the financial down turn went international.
@Steven, I know the rationale given by Congress & Eisenhower to justify the Interstate highway system. Though, if one reads James Madison, “With respect to the words ‘general welfare,’ I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”
And when he vetoed a federal public work bill he wrote, “The legislative powers vested in Congress are specified and enumerated in the eighth section of the first article of the Constitution, and it does not appear that the power proposed to be exercised by the bill is among the enumerated powers, or that it falls by any just interpretation with the power to make laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution those or other powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States.
“The power to regulate commerce among the several States” can not include a power to construct roads and canals, and to improve the navigation of water courses in order to facilitate, promote, and secure such commerce without a latitude of construction departing from the ordinary import of the terms strengthened by the known inconveniences which doubtless led to the grant of this remedial power to Congress.
To refer the power in question to the clause “to provide for common defense and general welfare” would be contrary to the established and consistent rules of interpretation, as rendering the special and careful enumeration of powers which follow the clause nugatory and improper. Such a view of the Constitution would have the effect of giving to Congress a general power of legislation instead of the defined and limited one hitherto understood to belong to them…”
A view he held consistently, as shown when in Federalist Paper #45, he wrote, “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.”
The interstate system was approved by congress in 1956 under Eisenhower. It was approved to make military transport easier in case of emergency. You could have Googled that much. The bias and white washing I refered to was the author not the President. If Obama has one failing it is a distinctive lack of balls when dealing with bi-partisan bs. Do have to say he is persistant though, having met atleast most of his promises. In two terms George got what ‘one’ done?
Your observations are spot on. Obama is just another big govt tyrant. One thing though, the first transcontinental railroads were built the same way our highway system was built, private contractors using govt money.
I guess I don’t agree with all of the Boston Tea Party comments. But, I did learn something by reading them.
To me, Obama’s speech last night, and his recent behavior, seem like a bumbling local Mayor, who decides to try to save the town by kissing up to the Chamber of Commerce.
People who care about politics care about war and peace, and genuine education, and a health care system. Obama was talking about percentages and numbers and nuts and bolts. And, he did that in between lying about how things are, and saying contradictory things, according to where he was in the speech…everything is great, so we should be proud, but everything will fall apart if we don’t implement these pre-formed policy packages I am trying to sell you.
Yeah, he was more used car salesmen than inspiring leader last night. I wonder if the Obama-lovers noticed that.
And, to say “simplifying the tax code” is to say nothing, without the details. It is absolute nothing.
I have to admit, I would be hard pressed to find a more opinionated article anywhere else on the internet. I doubt even official Republican forums could white wash bias and historical inaccuracy so well, and they created the Death Panel scare from start to finish out of thin air.
