Jim Burns website gets a facelift

James Libertarian Burns has updated his Presidential campaign website shortly after IPR reposted Jeremy Young’s critique of candidate websites. The update may or may not have been spurred by the article. I’m not sure whether the content was updated, or just the appearance. Here’s the Table of Contents (see the website for embedded links if you want to read the articles):

551 words, 2 minutes approximate reading time.
Why I’m Running for President

Libertarianism can improve the human condition. To the extent that libertarianism is adopted, we will see peace, prosperity and progress for us all. The Libertarian Party offers a peaceful vehicle to oppose oppression and implement liberty. I am seeking the nomination of the Libertarian Party for the office of President of the United States because I believe that I offer ideas that can hasten a libertarian outcome.

Word Count and Reading Time

There are approximately 38,476 words on this website. Some people have informed me that most people will not read 1,000 words, 4.4 minutes approximate reading time, so forget 38,477 words, 2.85 hours approximate reading time. For that reason, I have listed how many words are in each article and the approximate reading time, so that you may choose how many words you wish to read and how much time you wish to give. I used google and found that www.mindbluff.com/askread.htm said that the average reading time is between 200 and 250 words per minute. I have used 225 words per minute as a guide to approximate reading time. I hope the words you choose are of value. Read what you will and I wish you the very best. Thank you for your time and I hope you receive value in exchange for your time.

I have actually read the entire site (in ’07) and surprising to many I know, Mr. Burns has some very good ideas. I saw a video clip of him and Alden Link appearing on a libertarian leaning NY TV show in ’07 or 08. Mr. Burns did a very credible job and represented the LP case well(where IMO Link didn’t!). At his age ( and Person, Redick and possibly Gary also) he may think running for POTUS allows him to reach the most people with the message as time is ticking away on his efforts.

Instead of “poking” fun at all these LP candidates, I applaude them for the effort and I hope they introduce MILLIONS to the LP message and Party. CARPE DIEM !!!!!!!!!

Those who are able need to $end them Fund$ to encourage and help them $pread the L message to the ma$$e$. Alway$ give until it feel$ GOOD, Thx !!!

The Libertarian Party offers a positive alternative to the failed welfare state. We offer a vision of a society based on work, individual responsibility, and private charity. It is a society based on opportunity and genuine compassion It is a society built on liberty.

we did , at least when i was involved , want him to run for a less high profile office such as state assembly , which he was never interested in. He seems to like the big game or no game.

An unfortunate trait shared by many in the LP who could do more good by running for something more local where they can personally knock on most of the doors in a district.

having said that , Jim is a longtime activist from NV and has my respect for all that he HAS done such as changing his middle name to Libertarian just so the name was on the ballot , and it angers me when people say he is a convicted felon since he was convicted of tax evasion WHICH IS NOT A CRIME AS FAR AS LIBERTARIANS ARE CONCERNED.

    Agreed.

he sued the party over a bylaws violation regarding improper notice of site and time of convention… he has been nominated and lost to nota or another candidate every time I can remember. He is a loose cnnon and as a group we decided we did not want him representing us at a state _ it was a senate run against Harry Reid- level. we did , at least when i was involved , want him to run for a less high profile office such as state assembly , which he was never interested in. He seems to like the big game or no game.

Apparently at one point he sued the state LP, so a lot of people there remember that and dislike him for it.

I don’t know what he sued them over.

How does anyone get beat by NOTA?
    Are you kidding me.

  9. Jeremy C. Young September 19, 2011

Also, I don’t think Burns did this in response to my post, because this site had to have been in the works for longer than that. Rather, it’s a natural thing for campaigns to upgrade to better websites as they go along. This one is clearly an upgrade over the last one, and is probably more easily customizable on the backend.

    pathetic

  11. paulie September 19, 2011

Well, he tried to get nominated for statewide office, and got beat by NOTA for the nomination. Not sure if he has run for local office before, but I’m reasonably sure he hasn’t won.

Burns needs more than just a “facelift” .
He needs to run for some county office and win, he needs to run for a statewide office at minimum.

Burns’ website is…somewhat better now. The use of a header image and banner is good and bumps the site up into the C range. However, the site still has two big problems. First, Burns built a Joomla site, which is not a good cheap model for a campaign website; WordPress is the best unless you’re willing to spend a lot of money like RJ Harris did. The result is that links to internal pages are located in a weird place — Burns did the best he could with the software, but it’s not good enough. He’s tried to fix this by also putting the links on the front page in-text, which just makes things worse. Second, those links to internal pages have bafflingly misleading titles. How am I supposed to know that Burns’ strategy page is located under “The 93% Solution”? Grade (revised): C-.
