Constitution Party of Georgia: Remembering the Sacrifices of our Forefathers

Thoughts on the 4th of July

Your Role in Preserving our Grand Republic

America’s Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to the cause of freedom. To those of us who are 236 years removed from the American Revolution that may sound like nothing more than idealism. But it wasn’t. Not then. It was realism. It was necessity. It was what they had to do to survive and prevail.

And on this 4th of July, it is what we as patriotic Americans must do again. Not should do – must do. We must do more than wave small American flags as the high school band marches by or cheer the fireworks display or smear sweet, sticky watermelon juice from ear to ear.

You know what is going on in this country, from City Hall to the County Courthouse; from the State Capitol to the U.S. Capitol to the White House. And you may have come to the realization that despite all of the promises politicians make to restore America to greatness, that restoration will never be accomplished through politics.

Someone has said that culture always defines politics. And if you look at America’s culture and how it has devolved over the past 100 years, you know why America’s politics are such a mess. It will take true multi-generational cultural change, not just electing more of one political party or another to local, state and national office. But the simple fact is – you can change the culture. Yes, you are just one person. But you are all it takes. You, changing your life from the inside out and influencing the life of your spouse, your children, your grandchildren, your parents, your siblings, your neighbors, your friends. And they likewise in their circle of influence.

That is truly how the world is changed. It is how the culture began to decay – one person, influencing another person, influencing another – and it is the only way it can be restored. Of course it takes time. That’s why you must start now. Think of your children and grandchildren and the world they’ll live in unless you do. But what do you do?

Honor God. That is first and most important. America owes its very existence to the Creator and our Founders sought to honor Him in our Founding Documents. But relatively few Americans, and even fewer elected officials, still give Him any honor at all. The Lord’s Day may still be a day of rest and worship for some, but for many it is just another day of work and shopping, little leagues, soccer games, and swim meets.

Defend the Family. And it must be defended as the Creator intended: two parents, one male and one female, raising children in a home that honors God. Defending the family also means caring for and defending the unborn, the infirm, the disabled, and the aged – not simply disposing of them if they happen to be inconvenient.

Restore the Republic. That of course cannot be done – will never be done – unless and until we honor God and defend the Family. When Americans adhere to those first two principles, they stand on a foundation that will support the needed reformation in our civil governments.

In his remarks to the Militia of Massachusetts, Founding Father John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” What is rarely quoted is what Adams said just before he uttered those now-famous words: “…we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.” And in a letter to Dr. Benjamin Rush, Adams said, “Religion and virtue are the only foundations, not only of republicanism and all free government, but of social felicity under all governments and in all the combinations of human society.”

What must be done then is obvious – honor God; defend the Family; restore the Republic – and done in that order or it can never be done at all.
