Eliot Cutler, independent candidate for governor, held a “meet and greet” Tuesday night, looking for votes and signatures. Potential voters filled the main floor of the Captain and Patty’s Restaurant and Lounge on Pepperrell Cove.
Cutler, 67, informal in a dark sweater and slacks, greeted each visitor at the door, towering above most, but looking all in the eye.
After the greeting, voters were asked to sign a petition to put Cutler on the ballot. He ran in a crowded field four years ago and was generally faulted for being the spoiler who split the Democratic vote and helped put Republican Paul LePage into office. The spoiler question was brought up again Tuesday.
LePage is running again and Congressman Mike Michaud is the Democratic challenger.

Cutler volunteer Gail Lemont of Kittery was asking for signatures for Cutler;; 4,000 are needed statewide by May 27 to place his name on the ballot. She said she likes Cutler “because he is a middle-of-the-road guy. He’s a fiscal conservative and concerned about education and the environment.”
