Laura Wells Updates Campaign & Asks for Support

Hello friends,

I want to do two things in this message: 1) Update you on the campaign, and 2) Ask for your support.

First, we want a better California, and there is no reason for us not to have it. I am running for Controller on the Green Party ticket and partnering with Ellen Brown for Treasurer and other great no-corporate-money candidates. We’re showing up in schools, union halls, homes, and rallies around the state. Why are we running and asking for your votes and support? Here’s why.

We want a great economy. A State Bank for California would improve our budget, support local banks and credit unions, provide good loans for homeowners, students and small businesses, and invest in California, not Wall Street. In fall 2011 the legislature passed a bill to study a State Bank and Jerry Brown vetoed it.

We also want:

*Great healthcare, like single-payer Medicare-for-all that the legislature passed twice only to have Republican Schwarzenegger veto it. Now there’s Democrat Jerry Brown sitting at the desk, and the legislature won’t even bring it to a vote. Compared to the healthcare systems of other wealthy industrialized countries, Obamacare is the worst. There’s no reason for California to be pushing it.
*Great public schools, as we had 40 years ago. We were the envy of the nation, and now we’re modeling bottom-of-the-barrel per-pupil spending and unconscionable student debt.
*Justice and public safety, not the highest incarceration rate in the world second only to the United States itself. Jerry Brown defied courts ordering him to reduce prison over-crowding, and he pushed private and even out-of-state prisons.
*Livable environment, not fracking, and bad, expensive public transportation, wasteful water schemes, chemical food. The list goes on.

Let’s get real about solutions, and about people power.

We will get what we want when we stop giving the 1% and their corporations what they want. They do not want to reduce their power and wealth. That’s why they want us to forgo voting altogether, or to vote for candidates they finance. If their candidates win, you don’t win.

To replace corporate power with people power, we are asking for your vote in the June 3, 2014 primary, and we need your support now.

“Campaign reform” has brought no-corporate-money candidates even higher hurdles than in the past. Fees to Sacramento are $9,250: a filing fee of $3,000 just to be on the ballot (formerly free when we gathered 150 signatures), and $6,250 to have a full ballot statement go out to every voter in the state (formerly free before “campaign reform” in 2006).

So that’s it, friends and family and folks from far and near. If you are able, please go HERE and donate now. That’s https://laurawells.nationbuilder.com/donate. If all you can afford is $5.00, even that will help. If you can afford more, please “give until it feels great.” If you prefer, send a check to Laura Wells for Controller 2014, P.O. Box 10181, Oakland, CA 94610, and please reply to this email so we know “it’s on the way!” The immediate goal for the next two weeks is $6,000; then we’ll have enough to carry on!

And remember to vote in the June 3, 2014 primary. Vote no corporate money. Shock them.

With love,
Laura
