Weighing Presidential Bid, Bernie Sanders to Speak in New Hampshire

By Nicole Gaudiano

Sen. Bernie Sanders is taking his progressive message to the first presidential primary voters in the nation Saturday.

The Vermont independent will hold a town hall meeting at New Hampshire’s Saint Anselm College, which has regularly played host to presidential primary debates.

“Obviously, New Hampshire is very important in terms of presidential politics,” Sanders, 72, said in an interview. “And if I run, it’s important that we do well in New Hampshire, and it’s important that I start meeting people in New Hampshire and people start meeting me.”

Sanders said he isn’t planning to make any announcements at the college, and he has “many, many months” before making a decision on a run for the presidency.

“Look, if I run, I’m not going to be the multibillion-dollar candidate,” Sanders said. “I’m not going to be the guy getting the money from corporate America and Wall Street. But I will need a very, very strong grassroots movement, and that’s not so easy to bring about. So I have to get a sense from people who I respect in terms of what they think.”
