Libertarian Congressional candidate Andy Craig (WI-4) opposes Iraq/Syria war authorization

Press release sent to IPR:

Andy Craig, Libertarian U.S. House candidate for Wisconsin’s 4th district and chair of the Milwaukee County Libertarian Party, issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s request for an Authorization of the Use of Military Force in Iraq and Syria.

“The never-ending war in Iraq has now spanned four Presidents, three decades, and has cost us thousands of lives and trillions of dollars. I was thirty-nine days old when American air strikes began in Iraq. Two invasions, multiple civil wars, years of air strikes – in one form or another, America has been at war in Iraq for my entire life. One dismal bumper sticker I’ve seen says it well: I’m already against the next President’s war in Iraq.

“After pledging to end the war in Iraq, and being propelled into the White House on the popularity of that promise, Obama now comes to Congress to ask for its approval to send our military back into Iraq. And he proposes to expand this conflict to Syria, where the United States has managed to find itself on both sides of yet another foreign civil war. He does this even though he’s already been waging this war for several months, in defiance of the laws and Constitution and his own statements about Congressional power to declare war.

“I strongly oppose both funding and authorization for the continuation and expansion of this war, and I would vote against both.

“I would introduce articles of impeachment against any President, of any party, who violates the law and Constitution by engaging the United States in a war, without first seeking and obtaining the authorization of the people’s representatives in Congress.

“I urge Representative Gwen Moore, and the other members of Congress, to refuse the President’s authorization request, and to do what both Republican and Democratic Presidents have shown themselves incapable of doing: end America’s war in Iraq.”
