The Party for Socialism and Liberation has named its 2016 Presidential ticket. Gloria La Riva is the Party’s nominee for US President and Eugene Puryear is the PSL candidate for Vice President. The pair will be campaigning under the slogan, Vote Socialist in 2016. Combined, the La Riva-Puryear ticket brings years of election experience as both have run for numerous offices including US President and Vice President.

‘The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) is running Gloria La Riva for President and Eugene Puryear for Vice President as part of its Vote Socialist in 2016 campaign,’ a recent Party statement announced. PSL is now the fourth opposition political party to name its 2016 Presidential nominees, joining the Prohibition Party’s Jim Hedges, the Veterans Party’s Chris Keniston, and the American Freedom Party’s Bob Whitaker.

Meet Gloria La Riva

Gloria La Riva is no stranger to political activism. In fact, she’s one of the most experienced political figures from America’s opposition left. Unlike many opposition leaders, La Riva doesn’t just write op-ed articles on behalf of various issues and causes. Instead, she has repeatedly travelled to some of the most hostile places on Earth to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the activists on the front lines.

The PSL Presidential nominee has travelled to Venezuela to support the Hugo Chavez Bolivarian Revolution. In 1999, during the peak of the Bosnian War, La Riva travelled to the former Yugoslavia to film the documentary ‘NATO Targets’. She’s been awarded the Cuban Friendship Medal. And only days after Hurricane Katrina devastated the US Gulf Coast in 2005, Gloria La Riva was on the streets of New Orleans producing another video, this one titled, ‘Heroes not Looters’. Showing that her activism hasn’t slowed down, La Riva could also be found on the front line of recent street demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri.

In 1983, Gloria La Riva ran as the socialist candidate for San Francisco Mayor, finishing 3rd overall and 2nd in most working class neighborhoods. In 1994 and 1998, La Riva was the Peace and Freedom Party’s nominee for California Governor. And in 2008, she was the PSL nominee for US President. Currently, the 2016 Presidential nominee is a columnist for the PSL publication Liberation News.

In her own words

“Capitalism is a corrupt, bankrupt system that is destroying the environment while the super-rich accrue obscene wealth,” Gloria La Riva said in her campaign announcement, “The capitalist bankers torched the economy and the federal government bailed them out with our money. What an outrage! Today the criminal bankers are richer than ever while millions of working people have been plunged into poverty.”

La Riva goes on to explain, “A socialist system shatters this destructive model. Socialism means that the wealth of society, all of which was created by the labor of working people, would be used to create a sustainable environment while providing every person with a decent job or an income for those who can’t work, free education and affordable housing. Socialism means making health care truly affordable by making it free for all people.”

From bankers to workers to war profiteers, Gloria La Riva lets voters know where she stands when she says, “The military-industrial complex and the Pentagon war machine, with its 1,000 bases around the world, are not for defense but for Wall Street’s global empire. It should be dismantled. Massive military production is a complete waste and should be converted to useful civilian production.”

Meet Eugene Puryear

The Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Vice Presidential nominee is another experienced grassroots activist. Eugene Puryear is a Washington DC-based PSL leader who writes for the Party’s print publication and is a producer of PSL’s radio program Liberation Radio. His political activism began in 2003 when he led an anti-war protest at his own high school in opposition to the Iraq War.

Over the years, Puryear has become an expert on issues surrounding the broken criminal justice system, specifically police brutality and prisoners’ rights. That led him to author the book, ‘Shackled and Chained: Mass Incarceration in Capitalist America’. The PSL Vice Presidential nominee was a prominent leader of the Free the Jena 6 campaign in 2007, as well as the founder of Jobs Not Jails, the DC-Ferguson protest, and most recently, Black Lives Matter.

Eugene Puryear has been a sought-after voice for socialist causes. He’s appeared on news outlets such as CNN, RT News, and in the Washington Post. And he’s traveled the university lecture circuit speaking at colleges like the University of Maryland, Morgan State, Howard, University of New Haven, and Temple. Showing that he’s no stranger to running for office, Puryear was the PSL’s 2008 nominee for Vice President. And more recently, he ran for a Washington DC City Council seat in 2014 as the local Green Party nominee.

In his own words

In their campaign announcement, Eugene Puryear explained what a socialist White House might look like, “A socialist system would make the highest priority eliminating institutionalized racism, bigotry and inequalities. Police brutality and mass incarceration would be ended. Citizenship would automatically be granted to all people living in the United States. Access to contraception and abortion would be guaranteed to all women. Equality in every area of life would be realized for women and LGBTQ people. Socialism can only be achieved by a mass people’s movement that ends the dictatorship of Wall Street. Join us in building that movement!”

This anti-capitalist Gloria La Riva is married to the millionaire Richard Becker.

@James Clifton — You’ve surely got the wrong Richard Becker! And in this context, it’s pretty slanderous. Do your homework and have some sources before spreading such misinformation.

No idea who she’s married to, nor should it really matter, there are rich socialists.

A note on the ON article, the original article listed Tom Hoefling as the nominated AIP candidate, and did not mention Jim Hedges. Mr. Hoefling has been a rumored 2016 candidate, but has not announced a candidacy to date. This is the corrected article.

Well, someone could take that as being like a nazi being married to a Jew, but it appears now that the comment above was in error, so the point is moot.
