LP.org: Announcing our 2018 national convention theme

LP.org:

Dear Libertarian,

Over the last couple of weeks, I have emailed you about the contest to help choose our 2018 Libertarian Party National Convention theme.

Thanks to all who have voted and donated.

The final results are in!

Our 2018 Libertarian Party National Convention theme will be “I’m That Libertarian!”

For those who don’t know, this phrase references the motivational speech made by Dr. Marc Allan Feldman at the 2016 Libertarian Party National Convention. Dr. Feldman has since passed away and his speech lives on as a rallying cry for Libertarians nationwide.

Here is the final tally as of the deadline today:

$6,222 ā€“ I’m That Libertarian!
$5,200 – Building Bridges, Not Walls
$1,620 – Pro-Choice on Everything
$1,377 – Empowering the Individual
$395 ā€“ The Power of Principle

In total, this campaign raised $15,395 for convention expenses.

These donations will be used to help cover early convention planning expenses.

The 2018 Libertarian Party National Convention and associated activities will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on June 30 through July 3, 2018. Please save the dates on your calendar!

Thanks for your help in preparing for our 2018 convention!

So how well did the free market do with picking a convention theme? (No real snark intended – I don’t think this is a good choice because it is too insidery. It means nothing to most party members, let alone non-members. I’m wondering what those who are more active in the party think.)

The theme slogan has always been a trivial thing in my opinion. It’s not much of a marketing tool in either attracting the general public’s attention (especially in an off-year convention) or getting members to attend.

So, using it to honor Dr. Feldman isn’t really harming anything, and is a good thing in and of itself.

I agree with Shawn. I usually don’t even notice the national convention theme except that it might be printed on the bags delegates pick up their convention materials in or whatever. The next time I hear someone say “I wasn’t going to go, but then I found out that the theme was X and changed my mind,” or “I hadn’t planned on watching it on C-SPAN until I heard how exciting the theme is” will be the first time I hear either of those things.

    I agree with Shawn.

Not trying hard enough…”Fuck the Border Pigs,” “Fuck the Troops”, “Sanctuary Cities, Fuck yeah” r 3 immediately off the top of my head that would get lips moving.

“Iā€™m That Libertarian! — Building Bridges, Not Walls and Pro-Choice on Everything!”

But seriously folks, a foundation bought it’s way in to celebrate its founder/namesake. In this case, not a problem. But what if had been a MORE controversial figure? Like me or Caryn Ann? ha ha ha

Anyhooo… it was comical to see the abortion prohibitionists coming out of the closet at possibility a long time libertarian slogan could be a convention topics. And I’ve made a little list of these statist jerks.

    UGH!!!

Thanks all for your thoughts. I had forgotten that this convention is not a presidential nominating year, so the theme is of somewhat less relevance than it might be otherwise – not so much in attracting attention but in terms of people who choose to watch the convention on C-Span or follow it in other ways understanding the theme’s genesis and meaning.
