Redpath Manages Successful LP Illinois Ballot Access Drive

Bill Redpath petitioning outside the Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake, IL on the final day of the signature drive.

On July 11th the LP IL submitted approximately 36,600 signatures to the state in an effort to achieve ballot access for the party’s seven candidates this November.  25,000 valid signatures were required.  The deadline for challenging the petitions passed yesterday seemingly assuring the party’s full slate of state-wide candidates will be on the ballot this fall – with one possible exception.

The Libertarian candidate for Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White, has been challenged on the basis that voters may confuse him with the current Secretary of State, Jesse White, a Democrat, who is unrelated, and who is not seeking reelection.

Long-time Libertarian Party activist, former LNC Chair, and ballot-access expert Bill Redpath, who is also the current LP IL candidate for the US Senate, personally gathered 7,181 of the party’s 36,600 signatures (approximately 20 percent), averaging over 80 signatures per day for the entire drive.  The LNC contributed $30,000 for additional petitioning, a dollar amount that Redpath matched. Approximately half of the 36,600 submitted signatures were gathered by Bill and other volunteers, and approximately half of the signatures were gathered by paid petitioners (about $3.50 per signature).

Thanks to those efforts the following seven Libertarian Candidates are expected to be on the ballot in Illinois this fall: Scott Schluter, Governor; John Phillips, Lieutenant Governor; William Redpath, US Senate; Preston Gabriel Nelson, Treasurer; Jesse White, Secretary of State; Dan Robin, Attorney General, and Deirdre McCloskey, State Comptroller.

Congratulations to Bill Redpath and the Illinois Libertarian Party! Bill was a very active and energetic LP member in Virginia before he moved to Illinois. I admire his record of ballot access efforts and campaigns for elective office.

I doubt any other Libertarian activist has the triumphs, longevity, and is deserving of the praise that should be heaped on Bill Redpath.

Unfortunately, on July 19 we learned that the challenge to Jesse White is a challenge to the petition validity.
