The Gateway Green Alliance, the St. Louis chapter of the Missouri Green Party, along with the Universal African Peoples Organization, a black empowerment and racial justice group, will be hosting an event discussing the practice of degrowth early next year.
Degrowth: A Better Global Quality of Life with Less Production is scheduled for January 3, 2024, over Zoom and will focus on the titular practice of degrowth as a response to climate change. As defined by event organizers, the primary focus of degrowth is “increasing necessities in the poor world while decreasing unnecessary production in the rich world.”
“What are necessities? What is useless and destructive production? How can we teach children to appreciate people more than things? What does it mean to ration “embodied fossil fuels?” the event asks of attendees.
Event speakers include 2016 Green Party vice-presidential nominee Ajamu Baraka, Green Party of St. Louis Outreach Coordinator Don Fitz, Alice Green from the Green Party of Washington State, and Stan Cox, a Research Associate at The Land Institute.
