Prohibition Party 2024 Nominee Michael Wood Discusses Recent Party Changes in Latest New York Prohibitionist

The Prohibition Party is experiencing a changing of the guard and facing “a new era of possibility and potential,” writes Michael Wood, the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Wood recently discussed the shift in the March issue of the New York Prohibitionist published earlier this week.

According to Wood, the Prohibition Party is facing significant change on two fronts with the passing of long-time party figure Jim Hedges last month and the ascension of Zack Kusnir as party chair in 2023. Hedges, who Wood refers to as having “embodied the spirit of the Prohibition Party,” was involved with the national party for nearly two decades, serving as its chair, as well as being the party’s 2016 presidential nominee.

“Despite the challenges of navigating a landscape dominated by larger parties, Hedges remained undeterred, working tirelessly to ensure that the Prohibition Party’s message resonated with voters seeking an alternative to the status quo,” Wood writes. “However, with Hedges’ passing, the Prohibition Party faced a moment of introspection. The torchbearer of their cause had transitioned, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. Yet, in this moment of transition, the party found renewed vigor and purpose in the form of Zack Kusnir, who assumed the role of Chairman in 2023.”

Wood adds that despite the challenges of losing Hedges and the developing generational shift between party leaders, the organization remains dedicated to its founding principles under Kusnir’s guidance. He writes that Kusnir, while still focusing on the party’s original principles, is also bringing it in a more pragmatic direction. In particular, Kusnir has been reaching out to “a new generation of voters who share [the Prohibition Party’s] commitment to moral principles and social reform.”

“[Kusnir]’s leadership style, characterized by pragmatism and inclusivity, has already begun to resonate with party members and supporters alike, instilling a sense of optimism for what lies ahead,” he writes.

Moreover, Wood also states that as the party’s presidential nominee, he intends to use his campaign to further position the party on the national stage in such a way that it attracts support from a broad spectrum of voters who are otherwise disillusioned with more mainstream politics.

Readers can find the full article by Wood in the March issue of the New York Prohibitionist. The New York Prohibition is a monthly publication maintained by the New York affiliate that outlines party business and news on a state and national level. Additionally, it includes a section dedicated to the local history of the Prohibition Party.

Prague, agreed on all counts. Per the kewl kids on Reddit, maybe I should have put the /s on my comment. I’m certainly not wasting time to try to seriously find out what it means.

Agreed otherwise. National prohibition or national liquor laws in general? Ain’t gonna happen. Focus on the local. And, per your name, ignore other issues.

I would guess that a truly pragmatic direction for them would mean realizing that they are currently better suited to races for local office such as sheriff or perhaps state house, not president. Or perhaps at least that nobody cares about their views regarding Russia and Ukraine, or the price of tea in China, for example. Wood might mean the opposite and imagine that whatever he considers pragmatic views on unrelated topics is exactly what they need more of. There are a lot of things it might mean; additional context would help. I wouldn’t personally take the time to interview him, but maybe someone else here is sufficiently interested. Maybe not.

“More pragmatic”? What does that mean in a one-issue, or one core issue, party?

Moderation Management type drinking now OK?

Not sure why I insisted on using “Woods” when I had the New York Prohibitionist in front of me the entire time. Thanks, everyone!
