Socialist Workers Party Names Dennis Richter as Vice Presidential Nominee Amidst Candidate Change

The Socialist Workers Party announced over the weekend that it formally changed its vice presidential nominee ahead of the 2024 election. The party will now field labor activist Dennis Richter, replacing previous nominee Margaret Trowe.

According to an article published in the Militant on Saturday, the Socialist Workers Party nominated Dennis Richter of Texas to replace Margaret Trowe, who was initially announced alongside presidential nominee Rachele Fruit in February. The article cited health considerations as the reason behind the change. Richter was formally nominated to replace Trowe in late April.

“The Socialist Workers Party nominated Dennis Richter as its vice presidential candidate April 29,” the article reads. “Due to health considerations that need attention over the next several months, Margaret Trowe, who had been the party’s candidate, will no longer be able to run.”

Similar to Trowe, Richter is a long-time member of the Socialist Workers Party, having first joined in 1972. He works in Texas as an airline food service worker and is a union member of UNITE HERE! Local 23. Richter has a long history of labor organizing and previously worked as an industrial worker for over 50 years.

Richter has also previously run for public office affiliated with the party, first for mayor of Los Angeles in 2017 and then for Governor of California in 2021.
