The Pirate Party is hosting a series of outreach events this week, including several days of nationwide security camera walks, a livestream with presidential candidate Vermin Supreme, and a public movie screening to coincide with Free Software Day.
The event, known as Pirate Week, officially began this past Sunday with a livestream of the Pirate National Committee’s recent business meeting and will continue through Saturday, September 21. Almost all activities are accessible online, and the party has invited the public to participate.
From Monday through Wednesday, the party is conducting a series of security camera walks, where participants survey their communities for security cameras to add to a national open-source map. The Pirate Party first began organizing these walks in 2023 as a way to raise awareness about privacy rights and the growing presence of surveillance technology. While national organizers have not disclosed a full list of planned walks, events have been announced by state affiliates in Massachusetts and California.
Later in the week, the party will host several livestream events, including one on Thursday to coincide with Talk Like a Pirate Day. This event will feature a discussion on piracy with historian Marcus Rediker, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and an expert on pirate history, alongside members of the international Pirate Party community. The party’s 2024 presidential nominee, Vermin Supreme, will address participants in another livestream event on Friday afternoon.
Pirate Week will conclude on Saturday, which coincides with Free Software Day, an annual celebration of accessible software organized by the Digital Freedom Foundation. To close out the week, the Pirate Party will stream a public domain movie, with the title to be announced closer to the weekend.
