Libertarian Party members have recently won municipal elections in Texas and Massachusetts. Local members have won over a dozen municipal seats nationwide since the beginning of the year.
On Sunday, the Libertarian Party announced on social media that Ryan Woodcraft, a Texas state party member, had won his May 3 bid for a trustee seat on the Socorro Independent School District board. Woodcraft ran in the second district, located in El Paso County. According to election results, he earned 347 votes, defeating one opponent for a four-year term.
The Libertarian Party of Texas narrowly missed a second win in San Antonio, where two additional members sought positions in city government with the state party’s backing. Of those two, Chris Baeker placed third in a tight eight-way race, earning 1,484 votes, or 18% of the total. The winner received 1,657 votes, or 20%.
The national party also announced the week before that Sean Kennedy, a Libertarian Party member in Massachusetts, won his April 26 race for the Bridgewater Town Council. Kennedy is the chair of the Unified Libertarians of Massachusetts, one of several Libertarian groups in the state and the one affiliated with the national party. According to uncertified results, Kennedy earned 468 votes, defeating one candidate in his campaign for a three-year term representing the third district.
Independent Political Report is unaware of other Libertarian Party members elected in municipal elections since Kennedy’s win was announced in late April. The national party previously maintained a list of officeholders, but it is no longer publicly available. Earlier this year, the party also saw local victories in other states. These included seven seats in Oklahoma, among them its first mayor in the state, and four in Illinois.
Congratulations to Texas and Massachusetts Libertarian candidates and the voters who elected them!
