The Libertarian National Committee has amended its Policy Manual to allow members additional time to nominate individuals for vacant positions on the LNC and its committees when done by electronic mail ballot. The change establishes a 48-hour window for nominations before voting may begin.
In a ballot that closed Wednesday night, LNC members voted nine in favor and none opposed to amend Section 1.02.6 of the Policy Manual. The remaining six members abstained. The new language requires that a 48-hour nomination period be observed before conducting any business by email ballot related to filling committee or LNC vacancies. The motion was introduced by Keith Thompson, Travis Bost, Andrew Watkins, and Evan McMahon, and required a two-thirds majority for approval.
The motion was initially announced as having failed by National Secretary McMahon, who questioned whether nine votes in favor and six abstentions met the two-thirds threshold. That interpretation was later reversed following objections from a member who pointed out that, under the Policy Manual, two-thirds approval for an electronic mail ballot is calculated based on votes cast and not the full committee membership. With no votes in opposition, the nine votes were more than sufficient for adoption.
Before this change, the Policy Manual did not require a specific nomination period before conducting email ballots to fill vacancies. Nominations and voting could occur simultaneously, potentially limiting participation in the process. The motion follows the recent resignations of At-Large members Adrian F Malagon and Kathy Yeniscavich earlier this month, after which some LNC members urged the committee to provide time for nominations before immediately moving to fill the seats.
A special meeting is scheduled for August 3 to fill both vacancies, with terms set to take effect the following day.
