United States Pirate Party to Fill Two National Vacancies, Revive Press Committee

The Pirate National Committee will meet later this month to fill vacancies for its Director of Public Relations and Director of the Online positions. The committee will also consider reviving the organization’s Press Committee, with the new public relations director to play a key role.

The national committee met remotely on February 15, when chair Jolly Mitch Davilo reported that both previous directors had resigned earlier in the month. He said the organization would seek to fill the positions within the next week under party bylaws and begin gathering member nominations. The PNC will meet next on February 22 to fill both spots, with the voting process livestreamed for the public.

Under national bylaws, the Director of Public Relations is responsible for managing social media accounts, advising the PNC on its public image, communicating with the public and press, and coordinating opportunities for party members to appear publicly. The Director of the Online, also sometimes referred to as the “on-line” or Webadmin, coordinates volunteers to maintain the party’s online presence, including websites, blogs, and wikis.

Candidates for both roles must be active in their state Pirate organizations or, if no affiliate exists, actively involved in national Pirate politics. They must also attend at least one PNC meeting prior to the vote and be at least 18 years old. As the vote is taking place outside of the Pirate National Conference, only PNC members will vote, with a three-member ad hoc committee overseeing the election process.

In addition to the elections, the PNC discussed reviving its Press Committee, which it first alluded would receive renewed focus in December 2025. The committee has historically handled routine press activities, social media guidelines, press releases, and statements on breaking issues.

The proposal, put forward by Wanda Ward, the Pirate Party’s Lookout, would return the committee to its previous activities. Under the plan, the national captain would serve as head, with the public relations director as vice chair.

The rebooted committee would also take on a more rapid-response role and generate additional content for the party’s Through the Spyglass editorial series. A schedule and first meeting of the Press Committee are expected to be set immediately after the public relations director vacancy is filled.

Other topics discussed during the February 15 meeting included candidate updates and details about the Massachusetts Pirate Party’s leadership elections, which remain open to members until the end of the month. The party is also considering a potential transition from Discord to another communications platform following recent security changes around user IDs, though it is currently exploring its options.
