Socialist candidate for Govenor says, “Make California a sanctuary state!”

Via peaceandfreedom.org:

Stop all racist raids and deportations!

Carlos Alvarez is the Peace and Freedom candidate running for Governor. He is also a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

The Carlos Alvarez Campaign for Governor denounces all attempts to empower local police with the ability to do anything regarding immigration, including assisting federal authorities in racist raids, detentions and deportations of undocumented workers.

Citing the most recent example of this type of policy, Alvarez said, “The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has extended a heinous policy of including L.A. County Sheriffs in a collaborative effort with federal immigration forces in the deportation of undocumented workers held in county jails. This policy in only four years has lead to the illegal processing of 52,000 workers suspected of being undocumented and is responsible for the deportation of 20,000 people.

“This is not an isolated policy. There have been checkpoints in other counties aimed at attacking immigrants; there are reactionary laws against day laborers popping up throughout the state; and there is a general xenophobic hysteria being whipped up by the right-wing and fascist forces that is leading to heightened attacks on immigrants.”

Alvarez continued, “These policies are racist and criminal. Not only will I put a stop to these policies—I will demand full legalization for all immigrants and make California a sanctuary state! Stop all attacks on immigrants!”

Alvarez is a socialist and a long-time fighter for immigrant rights with the ANSWER Coalition. He has challenged xenophobia and anti-immigrant racism throughout the state. He will continue to fight until all immigrants have full rights.

Vote socialist in November! Vote Peace and Freedom Party!

Honestly, I have no idea whether the claim @ 2 about the required age being 30 is correct, and not motivated enough to look it up.

My sole point is that even if it is correct, he should be able to run anyway, and since he is extremely unlikely to win, there’s no reason for his party not to nominate him.

If, by some fluke, he actually won and didn’t qualify, well – that’s a problem alternative parties would love to have, isn’t it? I don’t know what would happen then, perhaps their Lt Gov candidate would then take office?

But since it’s highly unlikely, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to do what he is really out to do by running, which is make his case and his party known to people.

@6 and 7: fair points, but after a check of California’s state constitution, I don’t see anything about needing to be 30 years old in order to take office. Amendment somewhere? Perhaps.

Still, I’m looking for proof for 2’s claim.

this has happened before on the far left. One of the Socialist parties (Socialist Workers?) ran roger Callero a couple times for President, even though he was born in Peru or another Latin American country.

The qualifications to run are not necessarily the same as the qualifications to take office.

  5. Peter M. October 19, 2010

The VotePSL website says Alvarez is 23.

@2: If the California Constitution says that to take office, the gubernatorial candidate needs to be at least 30, when why was Alvarez allowed on the ballot in the first place? This document ( http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/qualifications/governor_lieutenant_governor_2006.pdf ) gives no indication one way or another, and to me would at least imply that you only need to be 18 in order to run for governor. Also, if someone must be at least 30 years old to take the office, shouldn’t they need to also be at least 30 to run in the first place?

Could you provide some evidence for your claim?

I hate to mention the obvious, but Mr.Alvarez is legally too young to serve as Governor, as the California Constitution states that a Governor must be at least 30 years of age.

I don’t feel like taking the time to look up how old he is, but let’s say you’re right. So what? He isn’t going to get elected, so he can still make whatever points he wants to make by running.

California had AZ SB1070 before AZ did, and nobody realizes it!

Oh really? Complete with racial profiling and everything?

  9. This should be Obvious October 19, 2010

  10. Socialists are Fools October 19, 2010

Mr. Alvarez might want to endeavor himself to consult the California Penal Code, section 834b, subsections a-c, especially subsection c:

“(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.”

    See http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000&file=833-851.90

In other words, no sanctuary cities and no blocking enforcement of immigration law.

California had AZ SB1070 before AZ did, and nobody realizes it!
