Libertarian Party of Nevada Selects New Logo Design

From Brett H. Pojunis at Design for Liberty on Facebook:

LOGO DESIGN WINNER!
Nevadans (and others) have spoken so we have selected the following as the winner from this contest. We have reviewed over 160 designs and spent a lot of time and effort on selecting this. The colors and fonts might change and we might make the flame a little bigger. We are going to play with a lot of different variations on this logo.

When is National going to start their campaign? We are going to sit tight and see what happens with that contest before we adopt this logo. However, we want to make sure that we have our new logo before LPEX in May, www.LPEX.org.

Still exists, as far as I know.

  2. Stewart Flood February 13, 2015

Oh yeah…as to why I brought this up on IPR? We haven’t had a good scandal here in a long time. We’re due. 🙂

Having only recently rejoined the ranks of what would be considered “LSLA” (I was elected state vice chair in SC in January), I am starting to look into what they’ve been up to in the two plus years since I left the LNC.

My recollection, from years ago, was that the LSLA had some money and it was growing slowly. They certainly had several thousand back then. I have been told by a reliable source in another state (who is afraid of coming forward and asking) that the balance after Ohio was significant — in excess of thirteen grand. Of course this is second hand, and that does seem like a significant increase in funds on hand over previous years. I have not had time to look through all of the mailing list archives, but there should be something in there about it.

I’d ask on the state chairs list, but the people who would be answering are the ones who may end up being deposed if something bad took place. If the LSLA really had that much money less than a year ago, where did it go?

And with all of the state chairs who read IPR, why have none of them spoken up to explain where it went — or to show us that there never was any money?

Is there a simple answer? Is there any answer?

I thought Jason Weinman was Treasurer of LSLA……

  5. Martin Passoli February 13, 2015

LP Nevada that is. Sorry if that as unclear.

  6. Martin Passoli February 13, 2015

Nevada has a very nice office, based on pictures I saw online, and supposedly several full time people working there according to claims they have made. What I’d really like to know is how they can afford to pay for all that. Brett Pojunis has said that he is a full time LP activist now and doesn’t have much in the way of savings. It doesn’t seem likely that money to pay for an office and several full time employees plus all of the travel Brett does all over the country comes from the tiny handful of LPNV donors. Where’s the money coming from?

The September 21st minutes for the LSLA Treasurers Report read:

    Treasurer’s Report
    Waiting for Aimee, probably nothing
    Update: Officially nothing
    Verbally presented and approved

The LSLA minutes from this past October 19 have the following

    Treasurer’s Report
    $6 service fee on account.
    Verbally presented and approved

    No numbers given.

    In other Nevada news:

    State Chairs,

LPNevada had a huge win today. We have been fighting against the tax payer funded soccer stadium since it was initially brought up. We collected signatures to give the voters the opportunity to vote on whether Las Vegans wanted to foot the bill for a private company (nearly $150 Million), we have done everything right with all odds against us. The first time we spoke with was literally 4 of us (myself, Vice Chair Jason Smith and Outreach Director Jason Weinman) versus a city hall packed with paid members for local unions. We got booed, we were ridiculed but ultimately we won and saved the tax payers at least $105 Million!

Today we learned that the MLS has decided to pass on Las Vegas until at least 2018! The main reason why is political uncertainty and the fact that the decision would be up to the voters in April!

    Here is the article: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2015/feb/12/pro-soccer-passes-las-vegas-stadium-deal-dead/

Stewart, are these minutes online anywhere? Where can we see the before and after numbers on this?

  12. paulie February 13, 2015

Good question. Aimee Love is the treasurer or the LSLA and Leigh LaChine is the chair, both based here in Alabama. You may want to start by asking them and the rest of the LSLA board.

Minutes of a recent meeting listing about $400 in the bank. Of course they could have it in savings, but then the report would have included that amount as well. From what I can tell, the money disappeared a few months after the convention. My understanding is that there was around $13,000 in the bank.

    Who has it? And why?

  14. paulie February 13, 2015

True, I don’t know for sure. I see no reason to shut up about it though. If anyone has any evidence that the LSLA bank account has been depleted please go ahead and post it. This is the first I have heard of it so feel free to share your reasons for believing it to be so. All I have seen is periodic treasurers reports from the LSLA which indicate that everything is in order.

As far as you know? Well you dont know p so su about it.

  16. paulie February 13, 2015

What happened to the more than ten thousand dollars that the LSLA supposedly saved up from the 2012-2014 period? Looks like it is broke again. Did the money exist? If it did, where did it go? Inquiring minds want to know…

As far as I know it is still there. What leads you to think otherwise?

  17. Mark Herd February 11, 2015

I haven’t read the thread here yet but here’s my two cents. I love our logos, our cali, our county (header @ http://www.lplac.info), etc. Wasting time and money on this type of project by the Nevada Libertarian Party Chair is beyond me. I hope lplac does not ask me to change the website logo from one of tradition and party colors to one of……..what do call that, purple pain?

  18. Stewart Flood February 11, 2015

    I hate autocorrection.

  19. Stewart Flood February 11, 2015

National was talking about logos when I joined it in ’06. There is no overwhelming reason to change, so why spend money (lots of it) to replace stuff branded with it.

Pojunis has is, has been, and will continue to remain a problem.

Also, I don’t see how this is really worthy of an announcement. They picked a submitted contest design, but haven’t adopted it, and will only do so after some unspecified changes to the design and colors, and when/if national picks a new logo. Then why are they showing it to us now as if it’s a big reveal?

They started the redesign contest because national has been talking about this with no action for a couple of years now and they felt the need to act because they want a better looking logo to rebrand all their materials. But then after they already started their contest they learned that national actually authorized one to happen soon (at the last LNC meeting). Nevertheless since the national process is now getting underway they are not immediately adopting the result of their contest but giving national a chance to take the lead, if it can happen in a reasonable time frame. Since they had the contest, though, they announced the results. If national takes too long they may implement it because they don’t want to use the old logo to promote LPEX. That’s the gist of it as I understand it. As you may have seen on the IPR email list, I also questioned whether this is a significant enough development to make a new story about when I forwarded it. Jed thought it was.

“My position is, and continues to be, that any affiliate using a logo that is not substantially similar to the LPUS logo is doing harm to the brand.”

But that is just common sense. Why would you possibly expect Mr Pojunis to follow the logical path when he can cause turmoil and dissent, as he did by pushing California into a joint convention weekend in Vegas?

If there is anyone in the party who gives off the odor of infiltrator, it is Pojunis. Why doesn’t Nevada see through this guy?

  22. Matt Cholko February 8, 2015

My position is, and continues to be, that any affiliate using a logo that is not substantially similar to the LPUS logo is doing harm to the brand.

McDonald’s franchisees all use the same logo for a reason…….

  23. Stewart Flood February 8, 2015

So the RUMCOTFH still exists? I thought they closed down after the 2012 convention…

  24. Andy Craig February 8, 2015

To sum up the reaction: Welcome to the Royal Universalist Methodist Church of the Fancy Hotel. 😉

If it’s going to be a monogram-type logo, I think it should be some kind of “LP” not just an “L”. All things considered this isn’t a bad idea- I’m a fan of torch/flames over other themes, but this one just isn’t quite… right. And while we’re on the topic of *wrong color* (even though he says that might change)- there’s a reason the LP’s colors are blue (classical liberalism) and gold (free-market capitalism). It’s also good branding. We’re not the purple party.

Also, I don’t see how this is really worthy of an announcement. They picked a submitted contest design, but haven’t adopted it, and will only do so after some unspecified changes to the design and colors, and when/if national picks a new logo. 25. Stewart Flood February 8, 2015

Sorry…it auto corrected DMCA to DCMA…not sure why…

  26. Stewart Flood February 8, 2015

Big whoop. Yes, it looks a lot like the United Methodist Church’s logo — without the cross.

    I wonder if they’ll issue a DCMA…

  27. Cody Quirk February 8, 2015

Yeah, it could use a better color then purple.

It ought to somehow blend in all 3 patriotic colors instead.

  28. paulie February 8, 2015

Positive space vs. negative space may be an issue here. That’s why I’d like to see it in black and white, because any LP logo will sometimes appear that way.

  29. Jill Pyeatt February 8, 2015

It does make me wonder if Brett is wanting to distance himself from the National LP.

  30. David February 8, 2015

Looks like a logo for a fancy hotel. Come stay with us.

  31. paulie February 8, 2015

Does anyone have the graphical capacity to post here what it looks like in black and white? If you are not an IPR editor email me the graphic and I’ll post it but I need someone to make the graphic.

  32. Jed Ziggler Post author | February 8, 2015

I’ll say this much: It’s pretty to look at. That’s about all I can say good about it. I don’t see that it has much to do with libertarianism or the state of Nevada, or much of anything. The flame reminds me more of the United Methodist Church than the Libertarian Party. And why purple? Purple is the color of monarchs and wishy-washy moderates. Gold has been the traditional LP color. (He does at least say the color could change, I sure hope so!)

Most of all, as I’ve said, unnecessary. In the end it’s just a logo and not THAT big a deal, but it’s still just one more example of the LP wasting time and money. Get someone elected to congress, then you can have a new logo & your own building.
