Jail anyone?

Cliffside hand bill

Alan Burns, a prominent Charlotte Area and North Carolina Green Party leader, has created a website, Think Global Green. Recently the website added the following information about protests of Duke’s plans to build a coal fired power plant on the North Carolina/South Carolina border.

A Call to Conscience: Cliffside Climate Action – April 20.

Charlotte will host a rally to stop construction of Duke Energy’s Cliffside Coal-fired Power Plant. On this day of action, named Call to Conscience: Cliffside Climate Action, hundreds of North Carolinians will demonstrate their moral indignation at the use of 19th Century technology that is unneeded, unlawful, and that is damaging our health and the habitability of our planet. If you’d like to participate, follow this link.

The Catholic Trotrskyites should join the protest committee.

Obviously you don’t know many of the organizers. “Liberation Theology” is the reigning principle, it seems. 🙂

Which is why I am somewhat hesitant to inject my political emphasis. Even though I have been involved with many of these same people in the past (when I was more or less with the Catholic Worker community).

So, no I have not pursued this. But I am still wrestling with it. And interested. Call me at 614-891-8841

    PEACE

Any progress on the SoA idea?

In comment #2 above, Nexus asks

I’m curious to know what law is being broken here to call building this plant ‘unlawful’.

Alan Burns sent this to me tonight.

In a December 2008 victory for public health, the court found Duke Energy in violation of the law and ordered its compliance with regulations for mercury and other toxic emissions. The decision has national implications because it closes a perceived loophole that power plants around the country exploited to avoid federal pollution controls.
Major to Minor! NC Division of Air Quality suspect. On December 2, 2008, federal Judge Lacy Thornburg ruled against Duke Energy in a lawsuit brought by the Southern Environmental Law Center charging that the Cliffside Power Plant construction permit, issued by DAQ, did not meet requirements mandated in the federal Clean Air Act. Thornburg ruled that the proposed plant at Cliffside will be a major source of hazardous air pollutants and therefore is subject to a complete assessment of Maximum Achievable Control Technologies (MACT) for hydrogen chlorides, hydrogen fluorides, mercury, lead, arsenic, dioxins, barium, cadmium and other toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Incredibly, Duke Energy attorneys reacted by issuing a claim that the company is revising the estimate of hazardous emissions from 217 tons annually to only 24 tons, an 85% reduction – without changing one nut or bolt in the design. For two years during the permit application process Duke has been using the 217 ton estimate. 25 tons is the threshold that separates major from minor sources. As a minor source, Duke would not be subject to the MACT standards. As ingenuous as the 24 ton claim is, DAQ has chosen to go along and begin the process of modifying the constructon permit to accommodate Duke Energy. more

Steven R Linnabary and paulie…I agree 100% with the idea of a Green/Libertarian united front at the SOA protests. In our case we are free to move as individual Greens, as well as local chapters and state or national groups. Would the same be true of the LP? If yes, what would be the first steps to bring something together?

Libertarians are free to act as individuals. Keep in mind that many libertarians are not involved with the Libertarian Party. This includes many libertarians near Ft. Benning, such as most of those involved with the Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama. I think some of the Mises folks might be on board with this.

Probably the first thing to do would be to form an affinity group.

I would be willing to be the facilitator of such a group, though I doubt I would be willing to risk arrest. I haven’t been to jail since blockading the Soviet consulate in ‘82 (Nuclear Freeze, NYC). But who knows? 😉

We should keep in mind that this protest is largely religious in nature. How would we as Libertarians and Greens fit into such a gathering?

But, if you hear about anybody interested in such activity, have ‘em contact me.

    PEACE

I think some of the first steps might include putting up a website and contacting Green and Libertarian locals, particularly those near the SOA (or whatever it’s called these days). You can set up an interactive planning list such as a yahoo group, google group or PHP forum or blog.

Not everyone who protests has to risk going to jail. Only a few of the people at the SOA protests cross the barricades.

To be honest Nexus, I don’t know what illegal acts are alleged, but I do know that things like electric utilities getting private time with state regulators happens, and that sort of thing may be illegal. Again though, I don’t know the specifics.

” I’m curious to know what law is being broken here to call building this plant ‘unlawful’.”

Response : The idea that a coal power plant is ” unlawful ” is part of the sickness of the lie of ” Global Warming ” which is in actuality a move to shut down industry across the planet, but especially in the United States, in order to bring about mass poverty so that the Plantation Masters of the nation may control their subjects/slaves. The Green Party is simply following the racist Social Darwinist plan of eliminating population ( i.e.’ especially the non-whites of the world ) by producing mass poverty. The Green Party, as with Al Gore and other Global Warming promoters, is hence a enemy of humanity. Only fools, idiots, and liars will believe in or claim man-made Global Warming to be true.

” I’m curious to know what law is being broken here to call building this plant ‘unlawful’.”

Response : The idea that a coal power plant is ” unlawful ” comes from the anti-humanity, totally evil, and beyond stupid agenda of the Greens and their fellow liars/nitwits/fools who are working to destroy all industrial activity and reduce humanity, if not simply the United States, to a Dark Ages of poverty and death beyond belief. Their hatred of Christianity leads to their embrace of the anti-Christian/humanity religion of ” Gaia ” which claims that the earth is a living organism plagued by over-population of man. Of course the real philosophy/religion which this is based upon is that of Social Darwinism which has declared all non-whites ( the real subjects of the claims of ” over-population ” ) and some whites ( like the Irish ) as genetically inferior and therefore fit and allowable to be killed. The whole global warming and anti-industry/humanity lie is built on the racist religious foundation which produced the greatest non-white killing organization in history, Planned Parenthood ( with its racist foaming-at-the-mouth witch founder, Margaret Sanger ), but was still unsatisfied enough with the results of that genocide to produce the bone-grinding poverty idea of ” global warming ” in order for the Plantation Masters of the nation to gain the true control which they want over their peasants/subjects/slaves. The Green Party, by its endorsement of the total and complete lie of man-made global warming, is a enemy of humanity. As direct agents of the Plantation Masters of the nation it is actively working to destroy and enslave all future generations.

Direct action and civil disobedience has a long history in the US. Much of it successful, by any yardstick.

’04 POTUS candidates Cobb and Badnarik weren’t opposed to using it as a tactic, although people are still arguing it’s effectiveness. Granted, it did not get them into the debates, but it DID shed light on a subject that most citizens are unaware.

Personally, I would not want to get involved in this action.

I would like to see a Libertarian/Green contingent at the annual SOA protest at Ft Benning:

    http://www.soaw.org/
    and
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_of_the_Americas_Watch

I would be more than happy to put my own body “on the line” in protest of US sanction torture. And Ft Benning is where the US teaches torture.
