Liz Cheney, a former Republican Congresswoman from Wyoming’s sole at-large congressional district and daughter of former Vice President Richard Cheney, recently stated in an interview with the Washington Post that she is considering an independent presidential run.
In the interview, Cheney said she’s interested in doing “whatever it takes” to prevent former Republican President Donald Trump from returning to the presidency, including the possibility of putting herself forward as an independent candidate in the coming months.
“Several years ago, I would not have contemplated a third-party run,” Cheney told The Washington Post, adding that she thinks democracy is “at risk” due to Donald Trump both at home in the United States and internationally.
When asked about her potential platform, Cheney told the Washington Post that she believes a commander-in-chief must be someone who will “abide by the Constitution, respect the rule of law and maintain America’s commitment to defending freedom abroad.”
If Cheney were to pursue an independent campaign, achieving ballot access in all 50 states plus D.C. is unlikely. Ballot access deadlines for independent candidates can vary significantly. For example, states like Utah, where independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is actively pushing back against state law, require validated petitions as early as the second week of the coming January.

I won’t vote for her. She is just looking out for herself.
If her intent is to block Trump, she doesn’t have to run a 50-state campaign. Swing states that Biden narrowly won in 2020 but is in danger of losing — Georgia, Arizona, maybe Pennsylvania or Wisconsin — are her targets.
One might propose that one of the Utah third parties will give Cheney their ballot line.
