The Kennedy campaign announced this week that it will appear on the Mississippi ballot under the We The People Party label. However, the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office has since informed state media that the party has yet to file the proper paperwork.
According to a press release by the Kennedy campaign on Monday, the ticket was officially nominated by the We the People Party of Mississippi, which claims it recently gained ballot access in the state. The party was first announced by the campaign earlier this year to circumvent difficult ballot access requirements for independent candidates in key states. The Mississippi effort, which the release states began in January, identifies Melisha Dooley as chair and Leon Giafaglione as state director.
State media outlet SuperTalk Mississippi News first reported on Kennedy’s nomination following his press release. However, according to an editorial note from the outlet added to the original article on Tuesday, the Secretary of State’s office contacted them several hours later to inform them that the party has not filed the proper paperwork at this time.
In a separate follow-up article, the publication states, “A spokesperson for Secretary Michael Watson told SuperTalk Mississippi News on Tuesday morning that the We The People party – which was formed with the sole purpose of getting Kennedy on the presidential ballot while avoiding signature thresholds required for an unaffiliated candidate – has been informed on multiple occasions that it has not filed the proper paperwork in Mississippi.”
As of this article, the Kennedy campaign has not yet addressed an inquiry from SuperTalk Mississippi News regarding the lack of paperwork, stating that it is “under consideration.”

As an aside, I found this New York Times article from January looking at the We The People Party when it was first announced. It states the Tennessee party only partially submitted its paperwork at the time, meaning whatever is responsible for the delay has been ongoing since then.

That’s certainly a possibility. According to information from the Secretary of State’s office, it’s a relatively straightforward process that requires filing several forms within 30 days after the party was organized (and even then, there doesn’t appear to be a penalty for filing outside of the timeline aside from not being able to operate sooner). The campaign release said it began in January, meaning that can’t be the annual update paperwork. That leaves the actual registration form, the names and information of state and national officers, the formal procedure for selecting county executive committee positions, and the party’s organizing documents. From what the Secretary of State’s office said to SuperTalk, the party filed some of the paperwork, but not all. They also communicated this to the party “on multiple occasions.”
