Libertarian Party Praises Trump’s Order to Dismantle Education Department

The Libertarian Party issued a statement applauding the Trump administration’s recent Executive Order to begin dismantling parts of the Department of Education, calling it a “pivotal, though partial” step toward reducing federal control over education.

On Thursday night, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Education to begin closing and transferring its responsibilities to state and local governments. The order requires agency officials to identify functions that can be phased out or reassigned and mandates that federal education policies no longer impose national standards, curricula, or assessments. The administration argues that this move will allow parents and communities greater control over educational decisions, returning power to local entities better equipped to address the specific needs of students.

In a statement following the order, the Libertarian Party reiterated its opposition to federal involvement in education, asserting that schools should be governed by “parents, teachers, and communities” rather than members of the federal government in Washington. The party further stated that education should be “voluntarily funded” and free from interference by the government.

Libertarian National Committee Chair Steven Nekhaila also addressed the order, describing it as a step toward decentralization that would empower states and local communities to develop their own policies free from federal oversight. He praised Trump and called his actions a positive move toward what the Libertarian Party considers true educational freedom.

The full statement from the Libertarian Party is below:

President Trump has officially signed an Executive Order to begin dismantling the Department of Education, marking what the Libertarian Party views as a pivotal, though partial, victory in the fight to remove government control from America’s classrooms. Since our party’s inception, we have advocated for dismantling government-run schooling, insisting that parents, teachers, and communities — not federal bureaucrats — are best equipped to guide children’s educational paths.

“For decades, the Department of Education has centralized power, diverted critical funding, and imposed rigid, one-size-fits-all regulations on local schools. Today’s action rolls back one layer of that federal overreach, allowing states and localities to innovate and tailor education to the unique needs of their students. We applaud President Trump for taking this bold step—one that paves the way for true educational freedom.” – LNC Chair [Steven Nekhaila]

The Libertarian Party maintains that education should be voluntarily funded and freed from government interference.

Of course Nekhaila won’t mention the bill that has has been introduced in Congress by Tom Massie to officially end the Dept of Education.
