Independent congressional candidate Tracey Tackett has picked up the endorsement of former Dayton Mayor and state legislator Rhine McLin in her bid for Ohio’s 4th Congressional District.
The Tackett campaign announced the endorsement Thursday, October 29, in a statement shared with Independent Political Report. McLin, a Democrat who previously served in both chambers of the Ohio Legislature, said she is supporting Tackett for her record of community involvement and ability to unite people together.
“Tracey Tackett has proven her commitment to her community and to bringing people together,” McLin said. “I believe she has what it takes to win and to serve Ohio well in Congress.”
According to a biography by Bowling Green State University, McLin was first appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1989 following the death of her father, state Rep. C.J. McLin Jr. She served two full terms before being elected to the Ohio Senate in 1994, becoming the first Black woman to serve in the chamber. She eventually rose to the position of interim minority leader.
In 2001, McLin defeated incumbent Mayor Mike Turner to become Dayton’s first female mayor, stepping down from her senate seat to serve in the role. She won reelection in 2005 before losing a third term in 2009.
“[Rhine] is someone who understands the challenges of local government and of small, industrial cities trying to prosper in a changing economy.” Tackett said. “She has experience I want to draw on.”
Tackett, a Springfield city commissioner, is running as an independent against incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan and Democratic nominee Joshua Kolasinski. All three candidates will appear on the general election ballot.
