University of Texas Poll Has Libertarian Gubernatorial Candidate Kathie Glass at 8%

Ballot Access News reports:

A University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll, released October 25, shows these results for Governor: Republican Rick Perry 50%, Democrat Bill White 40%, Libertarian Kathie Glass 8%, Green Party nominee Deb Shafto 2%. There are no undecideds, because if a respondent first said “Undecided”, the pollster then encouraged the respondent to say which way he or she is leaning.

The poll has the results of all the partisan executive statewide posts, showing Libertarians in some statewide races at 12%, even though all these races have a Democrat and a Republican in the race as well. In the one executive statewide race with no Democrat running, the Green Party nominee is at 9%. Thanks to Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire for the link.

The Kathie Glass campaign commented in a press release,

The poll was taken the week before early voting began and before the October 19th debate where many voters learned of Kathie for the first time. Click here to see the debate online, also available on the Video link of kathie4guv.com. Given her incredibly powerful debate performance, Kathie has to be higher than 8% now!

“If I was at 8% before the debate, who knows how high I am after the debate which all objective commentators said I won,” Kathie Glass said. “If all of you 8 (or more) percenters persuade 5 friends to vote for me, I will win,” she said. “Rick Perry is sitting in office with only 39% of the 2006 vote.”

“Given that the major party candidates have spent $60 million on this campaign so far, these poll numbers are amazing,” said Kathie. “People are realizing that if you insist on seeing a TV commercial before you consider voting for a candidate, you let special interests determine your vote.” The Kathie Glass Campaign filed a campaign finance report today that showed that the campaign has raised $76,000 so far — $43,000 of that from Kathie Glass and $33,000 from contributions no bigger than $2,500 and many under $50.

Kinky Friedman has endorsed Kathie Glass, and the independent 12% who voted for him are ready to vote for Kathie Glass. “The 31% of independent Texas voters who refused to vote for Rick Perry or a Democrat in 2006 are looking for a principled alternative. And the same is true for Constitutional conservatives,” said Glass. “You will never get what you want — secure borders, push-back on unconstitutional federal acts, a sane budget and lower taxes, and death to the Trans Texas Corridor and toll roads — if you don’t vote for it. If you keep voting as you always have, you will get . . . well, you know the rest,” Kathie Glass concluded.

@Carey, the Texas Green Party is overwhelmingly likely to have ballot access in 2012 due to the fact they have a candidate in the Texas Comptroller’s race- the only other candidates are Libertarian Mary Ruwart and Republican Susan Combs.

Green Party nominee Deb Shafto 2% hanging in there this late in cycle.

It will be a big deal if Deb Shafto and the Green Party can get enough votes to have ballot status in Texas.
