Green Candidate Jill Stein Approached Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud for Vice Presidential Role

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein has approached Dearborn, Michigan, Mayor Abdullah Hammoud about serving as her vice-presidential running mate. While Hammoud is too young to serve, the move signals an effort from the campaign to appeal to progressives critical of the Biden administration.

According to the Washington Post, which initially cited a source close to the campaign earlier this week, Stein informed Hammoud that he is on her shortlist for the role and approached him to go through the candidate vetting process. Stein’s campaign manager, Jason Call, has since confirmed the meeting and that Hammoud was approached for that reason.

Hammoud, a former legislator who was elected to his current position in 2021, helped organize efforts to support an uncommitted option in the Michigan Democratic presidential primary against President Joe Biden regarding his support of Israel, which ultimately earned over 100,000 votes for just over 13% of the total cast. However, Hammoud, who does not turn 35 until next March, does not meet the constitutional age requirement for the vice presidency by the inauguration date of January 20, 2025.

Call added that Stein, upon learning of the age restriction on a potential Hammoud candidacy, has broadened her invitation, asking him to instead consider a leading role in her campaign.

Hammoud managed to run Dearborn into the ground in no time, so why not the entire country?
