Libertarian Party Member Recalled as Mayor in Keenesburg, Colorado

Voters in Keenesburg, Colorado, have recalled Mayor Aron Lam, a Libertarian Party member, removing him from office less than three years into his first term following a campaign that accused him of eroding public trust.

Official results published by the town this month show that the September 30 recall succeeded by a margin of 241 to 54. Bruce Sparrow was elected to replace Lam, receiving 154 votes to 117 for challenger Shawn Stubblefield. Lam was not eligible to run in the recall race as a candidate himself.

Lam’s recall followed several months of pushback over decisions he made while in office. The effort launched earlier this year and was driven by residents critical of staffing changes and other administrative actions during his tenure, including former Keenesburg Mayor Ken Gfeller, who had openly called for Lam’s resignation during town meetings.

Lam also accused critics of targeting him for his libertarian views, with an alleged transcript of a speech presented at one such meeting sent to Independent Political Report suggesting they were a point of contention. Lam, who serves as the Region 1 representative on the Libertarian National Committee, was first elected in 2022 and had been serving a four-year term scheduled to run through 2026.

Lam had previously described the recall as “baseless,” characterizing it as a personal vendetta rather than a legitimate grievance. In his defense, he pointed to his record on growth management, transparency, infrastructure, and tax policy. His campaign against the recall also drew support from a wide variety of Libertarian Party state affiliates and organizations, including both the Classical Liberal Caucus and the Mises Caucus.

In addition to the mayoral recall, Trustee Cindy Baumgartner was also removed from office in a separate vote, 226 to 69. Christopher Miller, who ran unopposed, was elected to fill the vacancy with 224 votes.
