The Libertarian Party of Maine elected new leadership and approved several bylaws changes this month at its state convention, including amendments establishing a contingency process to ensure members may continue serving as national delegates if Maine ever discontinues tracking Libertarian enrollment.
State delegates met November 16 in Hallowell for the event. In addition to electing new Executive Committee officers and approving multiple bylaws amendments, the party also heard from speakers, discussed strategy for the coming year, and selected delegates and alternates to represent Maine at the 2026 Libertarian National Convention in Michigan.
Details shared online by the state party confirm delegates elected former Southern Region Representative Dane Courtois as the next chair. He is joined by former chair Jim Baines, who will serve as vice chair. Jason Mataafa was reelected treasurer, and Ben Tucker was elected secretary.
Delegates also elected or reelected the party’s four regional representatives. Joe Petrocy will continue as Western Region Representative and IT director, Joe Weeks was chosen as the new Southern Region Representative, Bryan Stevens was reelected as Eastern Region Representative, and Shawn Levasseur was elected to fill the previously vacant Central Region seat.
The party additionally approved a proposal reorganizing its regional structure. Under the new arrangement, the Eastern Region includes Aroostook, Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington counties; the Central Region includes Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, and Waldo; the Southern Region includes Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Androscoggin, and York; and the Western Region includes Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, and Piscataquis.
Delegates passed several bylaws amendments, including a pair of changes designed to ensure Maine Libertarians remain eligible to serve as delegates to the Libertarian National Convention if the state ever removes the Libertarian Party as a voter-registration option. The updated language in Article IX, Section IV clarifies that Maine-based delegates to the LNC must be registered Libertarians only if the state allows such registration. A companion amendment to Article XII adds similar contingency language.
Lastly, delegates also approved an amendment to Article XI, Section IIA permitting spelling and grammatical corrections to the bylaws to be made without a convention vote, requiring only a simple majority of the Executive Committee.
