Liberal Party USA Expected to Consider Acting National Chair at May Meeting

The Liberal Party USA is expected to consider electing an acting national chair at a meeting later this month, according to a source who attended a recent party call and said current Chair Trisha Butler no longer wishes to serve in the role.

The source told Independent Political Report that the party held a May 3 meeting where the need for an acting chair was first discussed. Butler remains involved with the party and was present on the call. The source also said Treasurer Chris Luchini indicated he would like to step down from his role but agreed to continue serving if no replacement is identified.

A screenshot of the meeting agenda provided to IPR presented the call as an “informal discussion about the Liberal Party USA” and listed several topics, including “Finding an Acting Chair,” “Finding an Acting Treasurer,” “National Messaging,” an “Update on Finances,” and setting a date for a future formal online meeting where voting could take place.

The source told Independent Political Report that a decision is expected at a May 17 meeting. The Liberal Party USA has not publicly announced a chair vacancy or leadership search, and the party did not respond to requests for comment and clarification before publication.

The Liberal Party USA’s website currently lists Butler as chair, Luchini as treasurer, and Apollo Pazell as secretary. The three officers were elected at the party’s December 8, 2024, post-convention Central Committee meeting to two-year terms expiring at the 2026 post-convention Central Committee meeting. Details on that meeting have not yet been announced.

Under the Liberal Party USA’s bylaws, the chair serves as the party’s spokesperson, handles forms and contracts consistent with regular party business, and presides over Central Committee meetings and national conventions, unless a convention chair is appointed and ratified by the Central Committee. The bylaws also say the chair may be recalled by the Central Committee for any reason by a simple majority vote.

According to the source, Jennifer Moore of the Pennsylvania affiliate offered to serve as chair if needed, though she expressed hope that another candidate would step forward before the upcoming meeting.

The source also said party finances were discussed briefly during the call, including the party’s existing executive director contract. No detailed financial report was provided during that portion of the discussion.
