Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht has changed his voter registration from Democratic to no affiliation, attributing the shift to what he regards as rising antisemitism within the Democratic Party.
Chris Potter of 90.5 WESA reported this week that Wecht announced the change Monday, saying in a statement that “acquiescence to Jew-hatred” has become common among Democratic activists, party leaders, and some elected officials. Wecht added that his “voting registration reflects that independence” and that he is “no longer registered within any political party.”
Wecht has served in elected office as a Democrat throughout his career, including as Allegheny County register of wills, a county judge, a Superior Court judge, and now a justice on the state Supreme Court. Before joining the bench, he was also vice chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party from 1998 to 2001.
The change does not affect Wecht’s seat on the court. He was one of three Democratic justices first elected to the state Supreme Court in 2015 and won retention to another 10-year term last year. WESA also reported that, as a justice, Wecht has generally voted with the court’s liberal majority.
With thanks to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News for making Independent Political Report aware of the registration change.
