Larry Gillis, a director-at-large on the Libertarian Party of Florida’s executive committee, is seeking one of the two vacant at-large seats on the Libertarian National Committee. The national committee is scheduled to meet this coming Sunday to fill the positions.
In a letter to LNC Chair Steven Nekhaila publicly shared this week by Third Party Watch, Gillis expressed his interest in one of the positions, stating that his candidacy “depend[s] entirely on the actual needs of the Party.” He said that he would focus primarily on merit and refuses to engage in what he called the “food fights” he sees as common in internal party politics.
“For me, ideas and policies will prevail (or not), depending entirely on their inherent merits. Personalities are irrelevant (As a grateful recovering criminal trial attorney, I learned a long time ago to disregard personalities and to stay focused on the task-at-hand),” he wrote.
According to details by Gillis, he is a professor of legal studies at the University of Maryland Global Campus and a U.S. Army veteran. As a Libertarian activist in Florida, he previously served as vice chair of the Libertarian Party of Lee County and as a regional representative to the state executive committee before being appointed to his current role earlier this year.
In addition to his candidacy letter, Gillis provided information on his political background and included links to several articles he has published in the Cape Coral Breeze and Florida Politics. He described himself as a frequent contributor to both news platforms, where he regularly posts while identifying as a representative of the state party. He also shared details of a proposed adult education course, “Libertarianism 101,” which he hopes to offer at Florida Gulf Coast University
Gillis joins former LNC Chair Nicholas Sarwark, outreach director for the Libertarian Party of New York Pietro Garaci, and former New York state party chair Tony D’Orazio as identified candidates for the at-large vacancies. The positions were vacated earlier this month following the resignations of Kathy Yeniscavich and Adrian F Malagon.
