Georgia voters vote on December 2 in two partisan run-off elections, for U.S. Senate and for Public Service Commission. In the Public Service Commission race, neither the Democrat nor the Republican had polled 50% because of the presence of the Libertarian nominee, Brandon Givens.

Libertarians have never won statewide office in Georgia, but suddenly their votes have become valuable currency in the extended U.S.

The months of November and December of any even-numbered year are the PRIME months to ask state legislators to introduce bills to improve ballot access (and to introduce bills on any subject).

Since Allen Buckley’s 3.4% take in the Georgia Senatorial race kept either Saxby Chambliss or Jim Martin from scoring 50%, there will be a December run-off.

With 96% of Georgia’s precincts reporting, the U.S. Senate results are: Chambliss (R) 49.9%, Martin (D) 46.7%, Buckley (Libt.) 3.4%. Georgia is the only state in which no one can be deemed elected to any statewide post (other than president) without 50% of the vote (also, Vermont has that rule for Governor, and Louisiana has it for state office, but not federal office).

The last time any minor party or independent candidate (for office other than president) received as many as 1,000,000 votes was in New York in 1970, when James Buckley received 2,179,640 votes on the Conservative Party line.
