David Blau has the skill sets, LP background, and professionalism to be solid as an At-Large member of the LNC. I worked with him one term. I am VERY impressed.

Probably shocking to some of you that thought I was some “key holder” or whatever– LOL.

I look at skill sets, team work, and results. David can deliver. Plus, he is young and represents the future of the LP. Put him in the game now.

    GOV. GARY JOHNSON’S NEW VIDEO:
    “I’M THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO
    DOESN’T WANT TO BOMB IRAN”

Sept. 27, 2012, Santa Fe, NM – In a new video, Libertarian presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson states: “I’m the only candidate who doesn’t want to bomb Iran,” contrasting his non-interventionist policy with the “I’m tougher than you are” posturing of President Obama and Governor Romney.

The video, called “The War Stops Here,” also highlights Johnson’s pledge to immediately bring U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.

Releasing the video, Johnson said, “The recent murders in Libya, the ongoing attacks on our troops in Afghanistan, and the growing anti-American demonstrations across Africa and the Middle East make it clearer than ever that our foreign policy is not just failing to make us safer, but is actually endangering us.

“Yet, we have a President and a Republican challenger who are far more concerned about taking shots at one another than about the shots that are being fired at America by people on the other side of the globe. We toppled a dictator in Libya, albeit one who is missed by no one, and what do we get for our dollars and effort? An attack on our embassy. In Afghanistan, 10 years after we chased al Qaeda to the hills and to other nations, our troops are still there trying to build a nation that apparently doesn’t want to be built and having the very people we are trying to help turn around and attack our military.

“And from Egypt to Tunisia, the so-called Arab Spring our policies encouraged is sprouting blossoms that are not exactly pro-American.

“The American people deserve a debate about foreign policy, and frankly, there isn’t enough daylight between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on these issues to actually have a debate. When you cut through the campaign rhetoric, it is not at all clear that the Republican and the Democrat actually differ from one another in terms of what they are doing or propose to do.

“We need to get out of Afghanistan now. We need to turn off the foreign aid to ungrateful recipients. And we need to stop trying to impose our will and our values on peoples that don’t want them.”

About presidential candidate Gary Johnson: Gary Johnson, two-term governor of New Mexico from 1995-2003, has been a consistent advocate for limited, efficient government and personal liberty. Johnson switched from the Republican Party to the Libertarian Party on Dec. 28, 2011. As the Libertarian Party nominee, Johnson will appear on all 50 states’ ballots. An outspoken pro-Constitution Libertarian, Johnson would end the war in Afghanistan now. He opposes the failed multi-billion dollar war on drugs and demands greater transparency at the Federal Reserve. As president, Johnson would cut federal spending by 43 percent, slash debt and make government live within its means while reducing taxes and regulation to foster real job creation and economic opportunity like he did in eight years as governor. The National Review said he was “#1” in job creation as governor. An avid skier and bicyclist, he has reached the highest peaks on four of the seven continents, including Mount Everest.

“I heard two Gary Johnson radio ads today!”

“I’m jealous, my husband heard one of Gov. Johnson’s radio spots.”

    Friends,

These are the kinds of messages we want to hear – and we’re hearing them!

Thanks to your financial support, more and more voters every day are hearing Gov. Johnson’s message over the airwaves on their way to work or during their favorite talk show. And those radio ads are having a very real effect. The crowds at Governor Johnson’s events are growing, our phones are ringing more than ever, and in key states across the country, his poll numbers are gaining.

With only 42 days left before Election Day and many voters already beginning to receive their ballots in the mail, the American people are beginning to really focus on the choice they have to make in the Presidential Election – and the polls continue to show that a great many of them are not very comfortable with either the Democrat Obama or the Republican Romney.

That’s why our advertising is so critical right now, and why we must keep it on the air. You can do just that by going to http://www.garyjohnson2012.com today and making a contribution that will buy one, two, three or more radio spots in a key swing state or on a popular talk show. We are on the air today because of those contributions, and we must stay on the air.

As the other side of the globe erupts in anti-American protests and violence – voters are looking for a candidate who pledges to bring our troops and our dollars home. As the Fed pumps more devalued dollars into an economy already stimulated to death, voters are looking for a candidate who will turn off the printing presses and protect our dollars from becoming worthless.

And as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney flood the airwaves with negative attacks on one another, Americans are looking for a candidate who is worried about their jobs – not just getting a job for himself. That candidate is Gov. Johnson, and our challenge is to make sure those voters know it!

That is precisely what your contribution at http://www.garyjohnson2012.com will do.

The Republicans and Democrats are doing their best to silence Gov. Johnson. They know voters will respond when they learn of his record, his plans, and his vision of an America where Liberty is safe. That’s why they are still working to keep him off the ballot, and why they are determined to keep him out of their debates. But we have you, and thousands like you across the country, who won’t let that happen.

42 days. That is how much time we have. Let’s make it count, and that begins with having the funds we must have to keep Gov. Johnson on the air, the yard signs going up in neighborhoods, and the bumper stickers going on cars. Please go to http://www.garyjohnson2012.com today and keep us on a path to make history in November.

Your support has brought us a very long way. The next few weeks will be exciting, challenging – and historic.

    Thank you,

Just maybe, just maybe building a LP organization the past 5 years is starting to pay off. Giving something for the LP candidates to stand upon in Ohio. Relentless perseverance and pushing the libertarian message forward in a manner that is understood by the general population of Ohio. And standing up to the corporate political parties, especially the one that tries to get us kicked off the ballot.

Anthony D – probably 48 plus DC. It does not look like Oklahoma or Michigan will have Gary Johnson on the ballot, but write-ins will be allowed in Michigan.

There is even some hope for Michigan. The federal court is being asked to order Michigan to let straight-ticket votes for the Libertarian Party be counted. That solves the problem that the ballots are already printed or being printed. People that want to vote for Gary Johnson could just pull the Libertarian straight-ticket device, and if there is some race other than president that that voter wants to vote for a non-Libertarian, he or she is free to have both used the straight-ticket device and then voted separately for that one particular other race.

For a change, the existence of a straight-ticket device might be useful for a minor party.

    http://www.ballot-access.org/2012/09/26/pennsylvania-statewide-libertarian-petition-checking-process-determines-that-libertarians-have-enough-valid-signatures/

The Pennsylvania line-by-line petition-checking process for the statewide Libertarian Party petition has been proceeding this week, just as it has for each of the two previous weeks. On September 26, enough signtures had been validated by the adversarial process so that the petition now has the needed 20,601 valid signatures. Furthermore, there are still some signatures to go through the process.

It appears that the only possible method for the statewide candidates to be removed from the ballot now would be a ruling from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, reversing the Commonwealth Court on whether certain signatures are invalid. The Commonwealth Court had ruled that signatures of voters are valid if that signer moved since re-registering and signed with the new address, whereas the old address is still on the voter registration rolls. This ruling only pertains to voters who move within the county, not voters who move to another county. Assuming the Pennsylvania Supreme Court approves this ruling, or takes no action, then the statewide Libertarians are on the ballot.

The only other parties on the ballot for statewide offices are Democratic, Republican, and Green, and the Green Party petition only listed a presidential and vice-presidential nominee; there are no Greens running for U.S. Senate or the other statewide offices. By contrast, the Libertarian petition nominated candidates for U.S. Senate, Attorney General, and Treasurer.

BAN is now reporting that the LP of PA has now validated enough signatures for ballot access!

    http://www.ballot-access.org/2012/09/19/pew-research-center-poll-asks-voters-if-they-have-heard-of-gary-johnson-jill-stein-or-virgil-goode/

On September 19, Pew Research Center released a presidential poll. Among the questions were whether the respondent had ever heard of any of three particular presidential candidates. 26% had heard of Gary Johnson, 18% had heard of Jill Stein, and 9% had heard of Virgil Goode.

The poll asked respondents whether they are voting for President Obama or Mitt Romney. 2% of the registered voters, and 1% of the likely voters, volunteered someone else, but the poll does not report further details. The poll does show that independent voters are far more likely to vote for a minor party presidential candidate. Registered or self-identified Democrats plan to vote 89% for Obama, 10% for Romney, and 1% volunteered “someone else” or undecided. Registered or self-identified Republicans plan to vote 6% for Obama, 91% for Romney, and 3% other. But independents plan to vote 44% for Obama, 42% for Romney, and 14% other. Here are the full results.

    http://www.people-press.org/2012/09/19/obama-ahead-with-stronger-support-better-image-and-lead-on-most-issues/

Polls consistently report that independent voters support minor party candidates to a much greater degree than Republican or Democratic voters do. Ironically, Independent Voting, and the California Independent Voters Project, hold themselves out as representing the interests of independent voters, and yet both those organizations advocate top-two systems, which prevent minor party candidates from running in the general election.

  25. zapper September 19, 2012

George Phillies likes to attack Romney, but he’s from MA, so its understandable. Some people have a preference for attacking Obama. Both deserve to be attacked, and so long as we aren’t forgetting to support Libertarian candidates in the end, have at it.

@171 Capital Gains are treated and taxed by the IRS as a form of income under the tax code. Different forms of income having different rules does not mean that capital gains is not considered income by the IRS and the Federal Government.

  27. Phillies' DNC talking points September 19, 2012

Wrong again Phillies. When you pay capital gains taxes, you file an income tax return. The more you parrot DNC talking points, the more foolish you seem.

  31. George Phillies September 19, 2012

Ape Romney haters? Romney is a Republican, a detail you may have missed. He is therefore a prime target, as well as his sinking ship of a party. If he has plans to get US troops out of Afghanistan, they involve invading Iran, where he has more or less explicitly called for war.

  32. Oranje Mike September 19, 2012

@156 Thanks for sharing this gem. His blog used to have some hilarious comments with poor grammar, lots of capitalization and foul language left for anyone that dare criticize what he posted. It probably still does but I have not visited in some time.

  33. Thane Eichenauer September 19, 2012

Really George?!? You too? You really feel the need to restate his words in a form nearly identical to that which I have only seen only modern day liberals do so far?

From what well does your desire to ape the behavior of Romney haters spring?

Neither Romney nor Obama has any intent or desire to reign in US military overseas occupations which in my opinion implies a gross indifference to the respect that should be accorded to each and every human life. If a genetic and philosophical replica of The Simpson’s Montgomery Burns should get nominated for President in 2016 I would care not a whit for his opinions or quotes on “moochers” (a word not actually found in the speech as best I can tell from the motherjones.com article) so long as he was committed to getting US soldiers out of countries they should never have been sent to.

Meanwhile, the Presidential candidate of America’s emerging third party, the Republicans, explained that people who do not pay income taxes are all moochers.

The list of moochers includes people on social security, poor people, students, soldiers in combat zones finally remembered by their candidate, and, of course, their candidate himself, who in two recent years paid capital gains taxes but no taxes on his income.

Of course, we all know Barbara Dale Washer would win if she adapted CCHFS–the Communist Conservative Happy Friendship Strategy–whereby she chose a Marxist male–preferably one named Markus–as her VP running mate. Because every Communist in Mississippi (and there are zillions–it is secretly a very liberal state; the “Soviet Russia” of America, some would say) it would put her over the top and she could become the Supreme Leader of Mississippi.

Mississippi ballots will print Barbara Dale Washer on the ballot as the Reform Party presidential nominee. She is the choice of the faction of the Mississippi Reform Party that is headed by Shawn O’Hara. The choice of the Reform Party’s national convention for President, Andre Barnett, will thus not appear on the Mississippi ballot. Barnett will appear in one state, Florida.

This priceless gem was posted to Eric Dondero’s webpage. I predict it will become a classic.

The Real Story behind Wayne Root’s leaving the Libertarian Party: Source – local LPers showed very bad manners during a party/fundraiser at his home
LIBERTARIAN MOVEMENT NEWS: RUMOR OF THE DAY!
Too much double-dipping in the Party Dip?
    From Eric Dondero:
Some juicy gossip. It comes from a very reliable source, who lives in the southwest. The individual is a former Libertarian Party member.
Of course, the standard disclaimer applies: We can neither confirm, nor deny these allegations. We’re just putting them out there. We’re running them under the proviso that we will not disclose our sources name.
(And I will not disclose the source, even if some Muslim terrorist hooks up my genitals to some electrical contraption.)
I have it on good information that prior to his leaving the LP Mr. Root hosted a fundraiser for Gary Johnson at his house in Las Vegas. Not one member of the Nevada LP lifted a finger to help Wayne yet they had no problem consuming all of the free food and liquor.
This on top of some of the party attendees berating Mr. Root for his ideological impurities after complimenting him for the great party he threw… for being a LINO [Libertarian In Name Only], Zionist warmonger, etc…
Mr. Root’s reasons for leaving was obviously due to his bad experience(s). It should also be noted that Root is Jewish and obviously witnessed quite a bit of anti-Semitism either by remarks directed toward him, deeds or both.
It’s clear Mr. Root resigned from the LP because he did not want to have his hand bitten as many times that it has nor enable a culture that embraces its own form of political correctness…
The Libertarians responsible for the disgusting manner in which they treated Wayne Allyn Root should not only apologize but could not hold a candle to the classical liberals of days gone by much less the Founding Fathers themselves.
Editor’s comment – I can see this happening. How many times has rudeness and bad manners led diehard Libertarian Party members to leave the Party over the years? For example, I remember numerous stories as to how badly 1980 LP vice-presidential candidate David Koch was treated in 1983, after his preferred candidate for the LP presidential nomination lost in the convention balloting. Koch, the second richest man in America. So, a handful of rude Libertarians ran off the guy with the big money bags.

You’ve all gotta hear this. It’s truly been my laugh of the week. It appears Mr. Bruce Cohen found some time in his busy schedule to call a radio show.

This was found on my California Candidates site. It actually struck me as absolutely hilarious, although maybe on some other day it would have made me furious. You can listen yourself at 1.02:50 on the 12th. You really can just go to the very end.

Bruce Cohen really loves calling anyone and everyone as “Anti-Semitic”. He’s had a problem with Judge Gray since the National Convention. He also happened to be WAR’s # 1 fan.

Cohen identified himself as a former LP official. Then he called a previous caller a “shill” for Johnson-Gray campaign because the caller said “Live free – Live free”. @149 — which ex-LNC member? doing what?

  49. zapper September 13, 2012

@149 Has the alleged time “error” by the Secretary of State’s office in MI ever appeared in any of the briefs?

  50. Joe Buchman September 13, 2012

    Zapper @ 148

Point well taken and, FYI, Governor Johnson never filed to be in the Republican Primary in Michigan. The SOS there proactively added him based on his visibility in other states. It’s my understanding the campaign didn’t learn of this until the last minute (it was before my involvement), and then rushed to file the form to have him withdrawn — which WAS submitted before the deadline — the timestamp on the SOS fax machine in Michigan not exactly being tied to the atomic clock up there.

I think it’s also a reasonable admonition to assume the Republican Party has already begun a fight to keep the LP off as many ballots as possible in 2014 and 2016, and is now doing so with the help of a former LNC member. I’d expect far more challenges and far higher costs for the LP in the next cycle.

    Joe

  51. zapper September 13, 2012

The LP needs to be more professional, organized, careful and use more strategic planning:

    Some lessons:

    PA:

    1) Any good ballot drive coordinator would have insisted on having every part of the form filled out neatly and completely. If not, no pay for that item and it doesn’t go in the count toward completion.

    2) Great performing petitioners often make bad coordinators. In fact, they often need lots of supervision themselves to dot and cross their i’s and t’s.

    3) The LP should hire its own coordinators and manage its own ballot drives. No more contractors.

    MI:

Filing to withdraw from the R primary, but a few minutes too late. All this trouble could have been avoided by being on time. Plan ahead. Get up early. Be professional. Think ahead. Really.

  52. zapper September 13, 2012

@144 According to an even more recent post at Ballot Access News, there was a partial victory as well as a partial loss in the PA lawsuit. Signatures where the signer moved but remained within the same county will be counted as valid. Signatures without “2012” included in the date were ruled 2 to 1 to be invalid.

The date ruling will be appealed.

The verification process will resume and, with the resored signatures and 10,000 more to verify, there is now a glimmer of hope that the LP will make it.

  53. Miro September 13, 2012

I interviewed Bill Cimbrelo, independent write-in candidate out in Massachusetts recently, and wrote up an article about that interview.
I’m more of a local news kind of guy, but this seems right up IPR’s alley, so I’ve been sharing it around the community. (IPR, Bill’s, The Modern Whigs because Bill was endorsed by them, etc.)

Secondly, I’m writing a second article specifically for the internet. Something more information dense and interviewesque, so I can get away with more space, so I’ll hopefully have that out in good time too.

    Feel free to share wherever!

    CC@135,

    Islam /= Islamism

Furthermore, when Christianity was 1500 years old, as Islam is now, its adherents were indeed still “kill[ing] innocents because someone exercised their freedom of speech.” Servetus was burned in Geneva in 1553. Wightman was burned in England in 1612.

  58. Jill Pyeatt Post author | September 12, 2012

cc @ 135: Good thing none of us here are concerned much about political correctness. We certainly disagree on issues, but no one seems to be saying things just becuase they think they’re expected to, or because they’re trying to play nice.

  59. Jill Pyeatt Post author | September 12, 2012

Well, good luck Austin! You’ll get it done sooner or later–

  60. Austin Battenberg September 12, 2012

My computer is running. But I’m in the process of reinstalling everything. That includes service pack 1 and 2, trend micro anti-virus, and then transfering all of my data from a external hard drive over to the rebooted computer.

This has been so long it is so frustrating.

  61. Concerned Citizen September 12, 2012

The events in Libya and Egypt clearly show the issue with Islam addressed above which the commentators here have decided to ignore. A religion whose adherents kill innocents because someone exercised their freedom of speech and insulted a likely pedophile that died over a thousand years ago is incompatible with modern society. You can continue to deny that a majority of Muslims feel the same as those that invaded the embassies, but you must admit that a large number agree. We don’t see Jews and Christians acting this way even with the constant attack they are under.

Obama’s response is a clear reflection of the political correctness that is destroying our nation.

Here is a review of the movie made by ex vice-presidential candidate Art Olivier’s movie, which was shown in Los Angeles last night. Alan and I were extras in the movie. We are passengers # 1 and # 2 in the queue. We weren’t able to attend the showing, but one of my FB friends did. this is what she said:

“My boy Trevor and I, who spent a year in heavy fighting in Afghanistan (against my wishes) went to the Premiere of Operation Terror last night. http://www.operationterror.com/
It was an emotional experience re-living the under-reported actual newscasts which were skillfully interwoven into this drama. We were downstairs in Theater 11 and in spite of the fact that Rave Cinemas didn’t put it on their theater listings, there was a fantastic turn-out. It was a rather private affair. I spoke with Art Oliver and Paul Cross about what was true and what was created for the drama. All of the broadcasts by the reporters were actual footage. Director Paul Cross was once a card-carrying Republican but after all the research he did around 911 he left the party. The character that he played in Operation Terror was a true depiction but the company was given a different name. Many of the movie lines were taken from court testimonies.

If you have a loved one who is considering joining the military to fight wars over oil and other commodities, this film will stop them before they go to die so that rich men can get richer.

Art Oliver was an engineer, a mayor, city councilman and ran for higher office. A great deal of evidence and research from an engineering standpoint is detailed through the characters. Many of the cast members were present last night.

My friend Mikos Zavros played an actual FBI agent who is now dead. His performance was excellent and he is just as dynamic in person as he is in the film.

Trevor had to get up and walk outside several times because the corruption exposed was overwhelming. It was quite an experience to meet almost all the main characters in person before viewing the film for the first time. I was very touched by an American Airlines flight attendant whose co-workers were killed in the crash in the audience. Years later she is still working full time to tell others of just what happened. These are courageous people who brought us this production and I am very grateful. Now, it’s our turn to get the word out about this film. It does not have a big commercial distributor, but I feel it would be a perfect Occupy or other group fundraiser. It delivers the message of the rich controlling the government and war that was created over oil as just a couple of the basics. DVD’s are now for sale, I will get the ordering information later today.”

It’s the first paid broadcast advertising, is how I read that. The home page says they currently have 432k raised for it and a separate SuperPAC has 100k of a promised 1MM for ads. I’ve heard 250k but have only been able to verify 100k.

Excellent news about Louisiana’s LP, Reed! Thanks for keeping us posted.

  74. Reed E September 10, 2012

If someone can post this, please do.
Libertarian Party of Louisiana hires Executive Director
Lafayette, Louisiana. For the first time in Libertarian Party of Louisiana history, a paid staff member has been hired. Wendy Adams, a former Ron Paul staffer, has been hired for the next 4 weeks as the LPL Executive Director. Adams will serve until the next LPL State Central Committee Meeting, where an Executive Director will be hired on a more permanent basis.
The Libertarian Party of Louisiana is the fastest growing political party in Louisiana and has been referred to by many newspapers as “the next major political party in Louisiana”. After seeing the unprecedented growth of the Libertarian Party of Louisiana, the decision was made to hire a paid staff member to keep up with the rapid growth and expansion of the LPL.
Nationally, few state affiliates have a paid staff member. This marks a great stride forward for the Libertarian Party, both on a state and national level. As the Democrats in Louisiana are left with few candidates this cycle and declining registration numbers, the Libertarian Party seems to be the only alternative to socially accepting voters in Louisiana.

  87. Jill Pyeatt September 6, 2012

This was found on Facebook, on the “Lawyers for Ron Paul” page. BTW, I don’t think Richard Gilbert works for Ron Paul. I think he’s just a random person who thought he could somehow broker a deal:

“In recent days, the campaign of Gary Johnson has sought to manipulate Ron Paul supporters with flagrantly misleading information seeking to have Ron Paul supporters harrass Dr Paul by making several telephone calls to Dr Paul to replace GJ’s VP, Judge Gray.

The GJ campaign is diregarding the decision of their own delegates, who with their soul and money, nominated Judge Gray. This is unnacceptable because it disenfranchises the Liberty Party delegates. The sanctity of every vote must matter, but, it doesn’t matter to Gary Johnson.

Some information being used by the GJ campaign are falsehoods such as, Dr Paul cannot have the top of the ticket because of Sore Loser laws.

Johnson himself was a Republican candidate for President and participated in a debate. Sore Loser laws do not apply to Presidential Candidates. Why is the GJ campaign lying to Ron Paul supporters about this? Why is Gary Johnson not offering the top of the ticket to Dr Paul? If the Sore Loser laws applied, they would also apply to Gary Johnson, one of the sorest losers of them all.

Well meaning Ron Paul supporters are being misled by the GJ campaign

GJ supports the use of drones and maintaining military bases in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

GJ supports censorship on his site. Does that sound Libertarian?

There is no need for anyone to make a decision at this time not to vote for Dr Paul as a write in. If on election day you cannot vote for Dr Paul you can choose another canididate. So what’s the rush?

Dr Paul knows he has a standing offer to be VP to GJ and he is not interested. So why harrass him?

I personally negotiated with GJ’s attorney for 3 weeks with the requirement that only the Libertarian Party Delegates must vote on a Paul/Johnson Ticket.

In the end, GJ refused to give up the top of the ticket so, I cut off negotiations. GJ has an ego problem!

Ron Paul said vote your conscience. Dr Paul is our conscience. Why isn’t GJ telling everyone to write in Paul?

If anyone says that I am in favor of, or approve of telepohone calls to Dr Paul to harrass him they are mistaken.

Dr Paul built this Liberty Movement and until Dr Paul endorses another candidate I say, we vote for Dr Paul.

GJ, nor his drones, nor his foriegn military bases, nor his censorship on his site, built any part of the Liberty Movement!

We should throw GJ out and replace him with Judge Gray!

It’s not necessarily that a “third party” is going to get those electoral votes. It seems possible that a few “faithless” Republican electors will vote for Congressman Paul.

  89. Nick Kruse September 6, 2012

With the difference between the odds of Obama and the odds of Romney winning being at almost 20%, hopefully that statistic can help bust the Wasted Vote Syndrome.
Also, it is extremely encouraging that people are putting their money where their mouth is on the belief that third parties will get 6 electoral votes.

  90. Nick Kruse September 6, 2012

Intrade, one of the best websites for predicting future events, has these interesting predictions:

    59.2% odds of Obama winning
    40.9% odds of Romney winning
6 electoral votes going to someone who is not Romney or Obama

Search the archives for US Parliament. It’s total garbage, but he has a lot of time on his hands (and is literally off his prescribed psychiatric medication by his own admission), and will flood the site with endless comments on any and every thread, so we have decided that for other conversations to thrive here his comments will be removed whenever we catch them and have time to do so. Right now I don’t have much time, so “enjoy” them while they last.

I’ll be done with my work project today and will have a lot more more time soon (unfortunately).

    Concerned Citizen @90,

Correction: SOME Muslims think that way.

    Others don’t.

Contrary to uninformed opinion, there’s no more a single dispositive version of Islam than there is of Christianity.

And I’m not just talking about the large divisions like Sunni and Shiite. There is significant disagreement among Muslim sects on the meaning of the foundational principle of tawhid (the unity of God).

And, as mentioned, you don’t get to have it both ways. If you’re going to advertise (for example) the Iranian “twelthers” as uniformly and fanatically devoted to a single writ, you’re going to have to acknowledge that that writ extends to Khameini’s commandment that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. They aren’t uniformly and fanatically devoted when you want them to be, then off the reservation when you want it that way. Take your pick.

Bruno, if the pact you refer to was as widespread as you suggest, wouldn’t islamic nations be bastions of religious diversity and tolerance? I repeat, burn a bible in a traditionally christian nation and compare that to what would happen if you burn a koran in a muslim nation. Bill Maher communicates this issue well. To paraphrase he says: we have christian nuts but they don’t see their neighbor working on sunday and think, “i really should kill him”. Muslims do think this way.

The Libertarian Party of Louisiana is seeking to hire an executive director. After seeing unprecedented growth this year, the LPL has recognized the need to hire a staff member, rather than relying solely on volunteers. This past year, the LPL has seen huge growth. We have elected 2 Libertarians (the first 2 Libertarians elected in Louisiana), we have run U.S. House candidates in 5 of 6 districts, and the LPL has seen an 18% increase in people registered libertarian since the beginning of the year. In addition, the Libertarian Party has been receiving more and more press as some in Louisiana believe that the Libertarian Party could be the next major party in Louisiana. As Democrats in Louisiana falter, the Libertarians have been on the rise and in some races, the LP is the only alternative to the Republican Party. The LPL believes that with a paid staff member, this will free up volunteers to do other, much needed work. History has shown that hiring a staff member can be another huge step toward making a difference in state politics. Duties of the executive director include recruiting candidates, supporting candidates, fund-raising, increasing registration numbers, and responding to inquiries. Contract length and compensation are negotiable. Any staff member will hold independent contractor status. For further information or any questions, feel free to contact Reed Ebarb at [email protected] and please send resumes to [email protected].

@70: it is fact that the Crusades grew out of the Islamic idea of Jihad, which Christendom was exposed to in Spain.

    Is that indeed a fact?

Yet God told the Hebrews to conquer Canaan, kill its inhabitants, and take the Promised Land — prior to either the Crusades or Jihad.

So the concept of God-ordered warfare and conquest seems to originate from Exodus.

  108. bruuno September 5, 2012

#76- I noticed that too, basically calls the district judge a political hack who was intent on rigging the system so the State couldn’t effectively appeal for this election. Most of the ruling is about what an awful judge he is. Good read (at least compared to the average court ruling).

  109. George Phillies September 5, 2012

@74 Thanks for the excellent news. And note what the Circuit Court says about the District Court Judge, which is about as negative as is seen in these matters.

  110. George Phillies September 5, 2012

@73 You are arguing with a typical Republikkklan hatemonger, Republikkklans being a party that will go down in history for the wide variety of crimes against peace, crimes against civilization, and war crimes it staged against the people of Iraq.

The most important question to ask any Republican about its 2012 election is “Where were George Bush and Dick Cheney?”.

  111. bruuno September 5, 2012

#70- What a load of crap. The Pact of Umar was in force until the 19th Century. Meanwhile Charlemagne’s Capitulatio de Partibus Saxoniae subjected anyone who didn’t convert to Christianity to death. That is some great humanitarian conversion work there buddy. And that isn’t mentioning the Inquisition, Crusades, numerous witch hunts, numerous wars and mass slaughters during the Reformation, the Holocaust (yes that was Christians committing genocide against another religion), Christian Identity movement, and on and on.
Your claim about Palestinian involvement in OKC shows that clearly you are little more than an ignorant, hate filled bigot. My guess is you could care less as to what the historical facts are. You will always find some way to claim that Christians have always been wonderful, peace loving people who have never been mean to non-Christians while Muslims have always been brutal savages bent on the slaughter of any non-Muslims.
But just think about this for a second- there are currently almost 2 billion Muslims in the world. If Islam as a whole was so obsessed with killing all ‘infidels’ than doesn’t basic logic dictate that there would be significantly more violence occurring today and that there would be mass genocides occurring across the globe?
The truth is there has been plenty of history of religious violence and intolerance in both religions. The fact that you readily deny and/or excuse such things when it concerns Christianity but believe false history to paint Islam as hell bent on killing all non-believers only shows that you are the perfect example of religious intolerance and ignorance.

  112. wolfefan September 5, 2012

    Hi CC –

I thought Christians wre supposed to turn the other cheek. You may also wish to reflect on what it measn to love your enemies and to do good to those who persecute you.

I was using conversion in a general sense. You are right that true conversion does require a change in mind. Sadly, this fact has been lost on many so-called Christian leaders over the years. I should not have mentioned Constantine – I’m not sure who I was thinking of right off. Constantine was more of a polytheist – he adopted many of the trappings of Christianity, but also continued to venerate other gods. Thanks for the catch.

  113. Concerned Citizen September 5, 2012

Denial of the backwardness of modern Islam stems from political correctness. It is funny to read others assert brainwashing has occurred when they are the ones who’ve been brainwashed. This is the ignorance that elects Barack Obama. The ignorance that allows good folk to turn the other cheek when learning that mobs of Pakistanis demand the execution of a little girl because she had to burn scripture for warmth. The ignorance that dismisses the idea that radicalism is strong in a community because once every decade someone from another community acts similarly. Burn the Bible in a traditionally Christian nation and see what happens. Compare that to what happens when burning a Koran in any nation with a substantial Muslim population.

  114. Concerned Citizen September 5, 2012

Very ignorant responses. To Knapp, religion by its nature is irrational. Constantine issued the Edict of Milan. The pact of Umar only occurred only during the very early stages of the initial conquests. And any knowledgable person will know that in Christianity, conversion required a change in mind. Missionaries worked with the pagans. Lastly, it is fact that the Crusades grew out of the Islamic idea of Jihad, which Christendom was exposed to in Spain.

  115. bruuno September 5, 2012

#64- Actually, Concerned Citizen, while Charlemagne was slaughtering all non-converts, the Islamic Empire allowed all Christians and Jews to remain with their own religion. It was called the Pact of Umar. Look it up.

  116. wolfefan September 5, 2012

Hello CC @64 – you may wish to study up on the role of forced conversions in Christianity. Consider Constantine, for instance…

  117. Thomas L. Knapp September 5, 2012

    CC@57 and 64,

You don’t get to have it both ways. Either Islamists are irrational and unreasonable OR they are operating according to a predictable schema.

    Which is it?

With respect to Iran specifically, you are asking us to believe that its government is acting according to a complete dedication to Islam, as represented by its religious authorities — but to simultaneously believe that its government is ignoring the pronouncement of its Supreme Leader (in both the religious and political senses) that acquisition of nuclear weapons is a sin against Islam and therefore the exact opposite of actual government policy.

  118. Jill Pyeatt Post author | September 5, 2012

Dennis @ 63: I think a lot of what people think of Muslims is because of propaganda put out by the people who want to keep us at war. We’ve had millions of Muslims living peacefully in this country for years. I’m sick of the hatred and think very little of people who perpetuate this crap.

  119. Jill Pyeatt Post author | September 5, 2012

CC @ 64: It’s inexcusable to paint a whole group of people as being a certain way because of the actions of a few extremists.

  120. Concerned Citizen September 5, 2012

Islam is based on conquest. It spread throughout Arabia, North Africa and South Asia so fast because the inhabitants had to convert or die. This mindset still exists today, which is why in Muslim nations, religious conversion is punishable by death and why many Muslims see it as their duty to vanquish the world of nonbelievers. Islam is incompatible with the modern world. It is inexcusable to kill a catholic priest because the pope quoted something muslims didn’t like. It is inexcusable to kill people because their film, cartoon, book or anything else offended your beliefs. It is inexcusable for a state to execute someone for being homosexual, being raped, committing adultery, or disrespecting a man of questionable morals that lived over a thousand years ago. Let’s be sensible and not fall into the traps of political correctness.

  121. Dennis September 4, 2012

  123. Concerned Citizen September 4, 2012

You are severely misinformed if you believe your examples even compare to how widespread radicalism is in the Muslim world. And in citing Timothy Mcveigh you’re citing an anti-government radical, who most anti-government types have denounced, unlike your Islamist friends who hold their radicals in high esteem. Also if you examine the Oklahoma City bombing more closely, there’s evidence of Palestinian involvement.

  124. From Der Sidelines September 4, 2012

IOW, LP California is in deep shit.

  125. Concerned Citizen September 4, 2012

Islamists cannot be trusted. They are irrational and unreasonable. No negotiation can be done with them. Liberals like George Phillies think illogically by favoring Islamists over Jews and Christians. In contrast, I side with Jews and Christians. Jews and Christians do not issue fatwas for cartoons or books. Jews and Christians don’t prosecute little girls that burn religious texts for warmth. Jews and Christians don’t fly planes into buildings filled with innocent citizens.

That’s a violation of the statement of principles, using fraud for political purposes.

The claim about Iran is a pack of bald-faced lies.

The actual position of the Iranian government, or at least its PM, is that demographics ensure that Israel will be transformed from a theocratic republic in which Islamites are allowed to vote but excluded from the government to a mixed-faith democracy — that’s the Iranian position — at which point the Middle East problems will vanish.

” Therefore Israel’s best option is to order the attack before the US election,”

Advocating for a war of aggression is a war crime, for which we hanged Herr Streicher.

I’ll also admit I’m a little afraid of him. Shortly after the article I posted in April about Wayne telling his raidio audience to vote for Romney, my computer was hacked and my husband’s was also. Was probably a coincidence–but it had never happened before.

  132. Thomas L. Knapp September 4, 2012

    Yes, he did:

“As I’ve predicted publicly for months now, Israel is assured of no help after the election (if Obama is reelected and no longer has to face Jewish voters ever again). Therefore Israel’s best option is to order the attack before the US election, when Obama’s distaste for Israel may be overcome by his desperate need for Jewish votes and Jewish donors to remain in power. ”

It’s one of the most vile pieces of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda I’ve ever read — not from intent, but from historical illiteracy, political naivete and military ignorance. If people like Benjamin Netanyahu paid any attention to people like Wayne Root, it could result in tens, even hundreds, of thousands of Israeli deaths.

On September 1, 2012 the NH Liberty Party held an organizational meeting. During this meeting the bylaws of the party were adopted. Included in the adopted bylaws is a five plank platform that can never be modified.

The NH Liberty Party supports secession for New Hampshire and believe individuals have the same right to declare themselves independent from any government. The NH Liberty Party Platform states the party’s support of individual rights, the principle of non-aggression and voluntary interaction. The Party also support repealing all laws that create “crimes” without a victim and believe “All peaceful prisoners should be released, so long as their ‘crime’ does not have a victim.”

The State Committee for the NH Liberty Party consists of three co-chairs. The co-chairs on the State Committee are Ian Freeman, Conan Solada and Darryl W. Perry.

Ian Freeman is a co-host on the nationally syndicated radio show Free Talk Live and owner of the blog FreeKeene.com. Conan Solada is an artist and a producer of Shire TV. Darryl W. 166. paulie September 2, 2012

Why does Ogle want to call his new party BTP? He is not interested in having it adhere to the last BTP’s platform/bylaws or to any historical reference to the original Boston Tea Party. The last party named BTP which was dissolved earlier this year suffered from confusion with the socially conservative, pro-war movement within the Republican Party due only to the name. The BTP has no ballot access and no money. There’s not even a website for him to take over, nor do I think anyone will give him administrative access to the facebook and yahoo groups. If I was starting a new party as he apparently wants to do I would think a better name would be in order; but then, it’s not like Ogle ever makes sense.

I don’t think this is any planned trickery by the Republican cabal but simply a desire by some people whose own beliefs prevent them from supporting any other candidate than Ron Paul.
