    To Joe and ‘me’:
You’re correct in most of what you’re saying.
The candidate was Kevin Zeese. Only the Maryland Green Party was dumb enough to give him a ballot line for his campaign. Immediately afterwards he ran as an Independent. When even asked by the media what party he was one of his sons/campaign worker said he’s ‘Independent’. Basically he punked the GP in this state.
Also, 3 times the GP candidate for governor, Ed Boyd (presente) and his running mate made overtures to the Zeese campaign for a mutual endorsement; common sense as both were state-wide races in the same party. What we didn’t know was that he was behind the scenes, and even up front at times, promoting a 4th party candidate who’s only success in this election was to deny Boyd the 1% needed for 2 more years of ballot access. They got it by petitioning, just the same.
Zeese also lied to my wife, part of the Boyd campaign, and a candidate herself for a State Delegate’s position, about his role in this whole affair; that he was working on behalf of the other party against ‘his own’.
I speak from authority as I was the campaign manager for the Boyd/Madigan ticket.
He was no anomaly. He knew very well how to take a weak party and manipulate it for his own personal aggrandizement.
Some state GP’s are very weak and very susceptible to charlatans that speak well and have $ connections but not an ounce of integrity.

His entourage of 2 or 3 were even running as Greens in other elections while serving as members of the governing body of that 4th party. Their screeds on list serves that were against us, and even from one who was on vacation , bordered on the deranged and pathetic.

They couldn’t handle real Green activists who had the balls to stand up to hypocrites, bigots and morons, even when some were Green.

This is over. I and my wife have moved on. We even are no longer in the Party although we have supported the good Reverend. We support good, real Greens, and if we should move to another state we’d gladly join the GP again if they focus on politics and not pure personalities.

“Adding blocs of votes & maximizing instead of competing & minimizing etc”

…and he played two of the parties against one another, from what i hear.

  3. Joe Momma November 5, 2009

….there was confusion and ambivalence because the candidate was an opportunist who told the media that he was an “Independent” after he got the nomination.

  4. Robert Milnes November 5, 2009

Me, I already know about it. It doesn’t count. It basically was an anomaly. There was confusion, ambivalence, uncertainty etc. this time the whole thing will be thoroughly publicized with emphasis on voter education of what is asked of them. & clarification of what it is NOT- merger of the two parties, renunciation of beliefs, one party having preference etc. & what it IS-vote coordination. Adding blocs of votes & maximizing insteadof competing & minimizing etc.

  5. me November 5, 2009

Do your researchL PLAS was tried in Maryland esnate race in 2006, much to the ire of many Greens in that state and at the shock of many Greens nationally for the MD Greens allowing it. Anyway, it was a miserable failure.

In Charlotte, NC, Libertarian Travis Wheat received 6600 votes, 1.7%, in a partisan race for city council. He was one of nine candidates for four seats elected at-large (there are also seven seats elected from districts). That compares to LP candidates who received 4600 votes in 2001 and 5500 votes in 2003 in the same race (Libertarians weren’t ballot-qualified for ’05 and ’07 elections). In NC, the Libertarian Party is the only ballot-qualified alternative party.

  8. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

paganstorm, sorry, I meant to say you have joined The Crazy Losers Club. Whether you like it or not.

  9. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

pro pot anti pot, I look forward to the possibility of meeting Catholic Trotskyist &/or The Last Conservative in Massachusetts. TPR, with a win in Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate, 2010 would get off to a roaring start! paganstorm, yes you are crazy here. As to your second question, let’s ask Prof. Phillies. According to him the LP is giving the Kennedy campaign some sort of ambivalent signals.

  10. libertariangirl November 4, 2009

Paganstorm , THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION!

  11. paganstorm November 4, 2009

Am I crazy here, or should there have been something on the Libertarian Party’s website mentioning there was an election coming up? Isn’t that what political parties do?

  12. Pro-Pot Anti-Pot November 4, 2009

Ironically, Catholic Trotskyist, “The Last Conservative” and I almost moved to Boston. But we decided to stay in sunny California. But if Catholic Trotskyist and The Last Conservative finish their mission for the Vatican, maybe they can go to Massachusetts to campaign for the PLAS.

  13. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

George, Solomon Drek @68 says he saw Kennedy on a free oil commercial. Is that right? Would that be Bobby Kennedy’s son’s Citgo oil free home heating oil program? Venezuela gave Bush a finger by offering Citgo oil to this program. Good program. Good segue for Joe Kennedy to get some publicity. Evidently Kennedy cares more about the poor & his program than he does about who replaces his uncle in the Senate. Good for BOTH Kennedys!

  14. NewFederalist November 4, 2009

OR… the LP could just meet in a phone booth (if there still are any!)

  15. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

I wish it was warm & sunny in the winter like CA or AZ or FL or TX or HAWAII! But no, east coast Massachusetts. Oh well. Let’s try to make the best of it. The LP could get a discount rate at some nice hotel. Or maybe people could visit friends/family & stay a while. Or go skiing. Visit NH Freestaters. Or VT progressives. SOMETHING to make the best of it.

  16. NewFederalist November 4, 2009

Geez Bob… take your meds and say good night.

  17. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

George Phillies@63, I propse that ALL Lib & Green party officials, candidats & activists support Joe Kennedy Libertarian for Senator in Massachusetts. We send more $ & more signature gatherers for now. Later, I guess after New Years, anyone who possiblycan go to Mass. & knock on every door for voter education about the PLAS. & on Jan. 19 we all stand outside polling places with signs & brochures/leaflets & talk with voters going in. Let the exit pollers & newspeople have them after they vote! We can call this the Progressive Libertarian Alliance Strategy Experiment. If a Green were to win in liberal Massachusetts, skeptics & critics & pundits etc would say it wasn’t the Strategy, it was liberal/progressive Massachusetts. So let’s pursuade the progressives to vote for the Libertarian in this case. A victory or near victory by a LIBERTARIAN! in Massachusetts would be undeniably due to the PLAS. & would set the stage for a rush to get a Libertarian OR a Green on every ballot first in 2010. Firstn on the ballot gets recognition for the Strategy. I personally am willing to go to Mass. if I get some support. Right now I don’t even have gas money! I need $ + a motorhome + solar panels. The motorhome could double as my campaign vehicle. I want EVERYBODY involved & the whole 9-bumper stickers Brian, t shirts, yard signs, magnetic signs for cars etc. & tv commercials & youtubes & websites & daily polling & letters to editors etc. Libertarians & Greens/progressives. I say we can win!

  18. Solomon Drek November 4, 2009

George@63: “It was generally known that she was a Libertarian. The local Democratic Party organization supported her.”

So Milnes was right! A Libertarian/Left alliance strategy does work.

Speaking of Milnes I intended to write-in his name for NJ Governor but I got cold feet and voted for Daggett instead.

“His efforts to contact the national party have so far gone unanswered.”

I don’t get it. Is he running an independent campaign or as the Libertarian Party candidate?

BTW I saw him on TV a few days ago doing a commercial for some Venezuelan oil company that is giving away free heating oil to the poor. Seems like a nice guy. I hope he wins.

  19. Ross Levin November 4, 2009

Sorry, Michael, I must have misread or read it too early or something. Were any third partisans elected other than Cam Gordon?

  20. Roger Snyder November 4, 2009

The GPNY site http://gpnys.org has updated totals, as of this morning, and links to the sites reporting results, and the candidates web sites.

  21. Darcy G Richardson November 4, 2009

With all of the city’s 404 precincts reporting, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl appears to have garnered 28,528 votes (55.4%) to 13,060 votes for Franco “Dok” Harris (25.4%) and 9,903 for Kevin Acklin (19.2%). While the two independent candidates carried quite a few precincts yesterday, the incumbent Democratic mayor apparently carried each of the city’s 32 wards — albeit a few of them by the narrowest of margins.

Though given virtually no chance by the Pittsburgh media, Harris and Acklin nevertheless combined for an impressive 64% of the vote in city’s 7th ward, encompassing Harris’s neighborhood, and 62% of the vote in the traditionally liberal 14th ward, where Acklin resides. The combined votes for Acklin and Harris also exceeded Ravenstahl’s totals in the 4th, 8th, 11th and 22nd wards. (The University of Pittsburgh is located in the 8th ward.)

  22. George Phillies November 4, 2009

Carol McMahon, former Treasurer of our state Libertarian organization, has been elected to town office in Beacon Falls, Connecticut. The office was non-partisan. It was generally known that she was a Libertarian. The local Democratic Party organization supported her.

Libertarian Joe Kennedy is still collecting signatures to be placed on the ballot as a candidate for US Senate, Massachusetts special election. The deadline for submission is November 24. Kennedy reports that he has over 11,000 raw signatures collected…a reasonable number with a safety margin for the 10,000 certified required is 15,000 raw signatures. His efforts to contact the national party have so far gone unanswered.

  23. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

Prof Phillies, did your candidate qualify for the ballot? I see no Green mentioned on wikipedia. Nov. 3 was the deadline. If so, the stage is set to give the PLAS a fair try!

  24. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

pro pot anti pot @58, yes we should be fair,& not always laugh. Even losers don’t always lose. & winners don’t always win. Even dems & reps lose about half the time. & ballot initiatives win sometimes.

  25. Pro-Pot Anti-Pot November 4, 2009

Oh, and the pro-pot measure passed in a Colorado town, decriminalizing medical marijuana. Pro-pot and anti-pot people shouldn’t let their bitter campaigns distract them from the value of forming an alliance against those who are apathetic about pot. Remember, Chris Daggett could have won with 60% if he had endorsed the strategy, and Kaplan could have won with 40%. But did they listen to me? No, so welcome to the Crazy Losers club, Daggett and Kaplan.

  26. Pro-Pot Anti-Pot November 4, 2009

In fairness, It does seem there was some independent victory, in the mayoral race in Toledo, Ohio, where a Democrat was defeated. I read about it on a Republican site called Free Republic, where they are very happy about it. Ohio also passed a measure to allow gambling.

  27. Pro-Pot Anti-Pot November 4, 2009

    Thanks Robert!

  28. Mik Robertson November 4, 2009

With about 98% of the precincts reporting, Libertarian Marakay Rogers for Superior Court has 121,340 votes or 2%. The highest statewide vote-getter also is in this race, and has 901,290 votes, or 15%. This has implications for our ballot access next year, which if things hold up figures to be one of the easiest signature gathering requirements we will have had in a long time.

  29. Michael H. Wilson November 4, 2009

Interesting events in Maine from what I read. Voters turned down gay marriage and voted in favor of medical marijuana. On the surface this look odd but maybe the deveil is in the details.

  30. Robert Milnes November 4, 2009

pro pot anti pot, here you are! unfortunately i’m pretty tired. may call it a night. but you are an excellent stand in.

Mike Indiana – I don’t think NYS has straight ticket voting.

  32. Pro-Pot Anti-Pot November 4, 2009

Yay, Democrat Garamendi won in US House race in California! Third party losers get single digits again.

  33. Michael Cavlan November 4, 2009

    Ross @ 38

Actually more than 2 votes. In fact given that I had no campaign lit, did not get any lawn signs, no debates and in fact campaigned for Jeanine Estime of the Greens, I was pleasantly surprised by this

    Ithaca, New York

Jennifer Dotson was re-elected to the Common Council Ward 1 she was unopposed.

Dotson a registered Green was the Green Party and Democratic Party nominee.
    She received
166 votes on the Democratic Party ballot line
46 votes on the Green Party ballot line
    http://www.tompkins-co.org/boe/2009/General/09%20Results/ITHACA%20CITY%20ALDERPERSON%20WARD%201.pdf

In 2007 Dotson (a registered Green) was also the Green & Dem nominee

Anyone know if New York has straight ticket voting?

  36. Solomon Drek November 4, 2009

Independent candidate for NJ governor turned out to be a non factor in the race. He didn’t even achieve spoiler status because his vote total was less than Chris Christie’s margin of victory.

I voted for Daggett but evidently he just did not have enough resources to compete despite public financing, televised debates, and the endorsement of the state’s largest newspaper.

  37. Stephen Gordon November 4, 2009

Hoffman just conceded. Damned Republican just stole the election from the third party candidate. Perhaps we should make it tougher for Republicans to get on the ballot if their only intention is to spoil the vote. 🙂

  38. Mik Robertson November 3, 2009

Update, Ebert Beeman, Libertarian running as Republican, did win:
    COUNTY COUNCIL 6TH DISTRICT
VOTE FOR NOT MORE THAN 1
(WITH 23 OF 23 PRECINCTS COUNTED)
    GERALD D. PRICE, JR. (DEM). . . . . 1,851 28.93

    Minneapolis

Our very own Michael Cavlan got 2 votes in the first round of his city council race in Minneapolis. He got over 20% in the other rounds, but those don’t matter because the winner got a majority in the first round.

  44. Mike Indiana November 3, 2009

The Green Party is once again on the path to winning several city council races in major and midsized cities.

    In Massachusetts
Chuck Turner was re-elected to the Boston city council.
    CHUCK TURNER – 5,516 (59.83%)
    CARLOS T. HENRIQUEZ – 3,641 (39.49%)
    Write-in Votes 63 (0.68%)
    100% reporting
    http://www.cityofboston.gov/elections/currentelections/

    In Portland, Maine
Kevin Donoghue was re-elected (2nd term) to the City Council
    Kevin Donoghue 1,779 votes (66%)
    Charles Bragdon 915 (34%)

The Greens will also win in Minneapolis with Cam Gordon sure to cruise to a re-election victory in City Council Ward 2.

  45. Kimberly Wilder November 3, 2009

I was very interested in seeing Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) played out in the Minneapolis Mayor race.

It turned out to be disappointing.

I am not positive how to read all this. But, I believe that the incumbent wins on the first round, since he got over 50% of the vote.

Providing link and stats below for people to see how various third party folks stood up. Both Al Flowers and Papa John Kolstad had links with the Green Party, though, neither was running as a green this time around.

I think the Papa John camp truly thought they had a chance. He was running on an independent line, and then accepted Republican endorsement and line, too.

Trent, I’m about to go to bed. I could just do a quick, no effort post on it if you’d like me to.

“It looks like Green Party member Brian Cummings is beating Communist Party’s Rick Nagin in Cleveland’s 14th ward, 57%-43%”

Ross–if you get a chance, do a blog on this. It’s the most interesting race tonight from a third party perspective, I think. Make the headline something like “Green beating Communist in Cleveland, Ohio election” Something that will grab attention =)

Also–Id like to thank Eric Garris, of Antiwar.com and Lewrockwell.com, for linking us on the LRC blog–we’ve gotten about 4000 hits from that in two days.

Looks like the Libertarian-turned-Republican will win. Anyone know if he’s a Ron Pauler?

The results for this race: https://independentpoliticalreport.com/2009/10/green-democrat-turned-independent-and-libertarian-turned-republican-face-off-in-erie/

    are interesting.

There is a Lib-turned-Rep running, the incumbent Rep is running a write-in campaign, a Green is running, and an independent and Democrat are both running as well.

In Lorain county, both Libertarians are losing their respective Lorain City Council races (this is one of the very few cities in Ohio to use partisan ballots for city council races).

In Marion County, Libertarians Angela Williams and Spencer Phelps are losing their respective races.

In Gahanna, Libertarian City Councilman John McAlister is running unopposed for a fourth term.

    PA election results:

    http://www.electionreturns.state.pa.us/

The only statewide race with a third party candidate was superior court, with Libertarian Marakay Rogers running. Four candidates win in that race, with maybe eight or nine running. Rogers is in last with 53% of precincts reporting and about 2% of the vote.

  70. Ross Levin Post author | November 3, 2009

An independent got about 12% for Atlantic City mayor. I’ve only seen one independent victory tonight so far and that’s in Hoboken, NJ – although there must be a story behind that.

  71. Ross Levin Post author | November 3, 2009

Gene Baldasseri, the first Modern Whig Party candidate to run for office with the party’s name on the ballot next to his, only has 1% of the vote in New Jersey’s 14th Assembly district. There are two winners in this race and five people running, and 41% of precincts are reporting.

  72. Ross Levin Post author | November 3, 2009

Apparently in Hoboken, NJ only independents were running for mayor. Maybe that’s just how they list a non-partisan race on the website I linked to.

  73. Ross Levin Post author | November 3, 2009

That’s not that many votes at all for such a big city. Darcy, do you have a link to where you’re getting that info?

  74. Darcy G Richardson November 3, 2009

In Pittsburgh’s mayoral contest, independent candidates Franco “Dok” Harris and Kevin Acklin are combining for approximately 44% of the vote against incumbent Democratic Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

With 200 of the city’s 404 precincts reporting, Ravenstahl, whose name is listed on both major-party tickets, has 13,633 votes to 5,892 for Harris and 4,836 votes for Acklin.

  75. Trent Hill November 3, 2009

Doug Hoffman is well on his way to a win, Ken Cuccinelli, the Ron Paul endorsed candidate for Attorney General in Virginia, has won. It’s going to be an interesting night for the Republican establihsment.
